Maybe my memory is off here, but why does it alway sseem like the Guatamala game is the one that does this? Do they make more money doing the PPV license rather than selling world feed licenses? I wish we would do the same to them lol
Yup. No US channel (ESPN, NBC, FOX -- if they still show US Soccer) was willing to pay the price for this game. I heard a rumor it was "mid six digits" that the Guatemalan Fed was demanding. Add in fees for announcers and satellite costs, and it was a cost that the various brass decided would be better spent on more important games played next year.
Fado advertises the cover fee cause they have to, but everytime ive gone you get the cover price in pub cash so its essentially free.
What's the parking situation around 4th street? Is it residents permit mostly with only a few public spots?
Disappointing result, but we have 4 points through 2 matches and are tied at the top of our group (though ahead of Jamaica on GD). I think Guatemala away was probably the toughest match in our group. Jamaica and Antigua & Barbuda away should not be too difficult. Antigua & Barbuda really are not a skilled enough side for it to matter where we play them, and both Jamaica and Antigua & Barbuda lack the diehard fanbase that leads to a truly hostile environment on the road. Worst case scenario, I see us getting 10 points from our remaining 4 matches, giving us 14 points through 6 matches and a spot at the top of our group. As of right now, the hex would feature Mexico (#10 in the ELO rankings), Panama (#36), Costa Rica ($45), Jamaica (#46), Canada (#61), and the US (#31). Honduras (#58) would be the highest rated side eliminated in Stage 3.
I don't know what to make of this, The Daily Mail is saying that USNMT snubbed us soldiers when they landed in Guatemala. If some players as stated posed for pictures and gave autographs, i am not putting to much stock in this story. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...roops-lined-greet-arrived-game-Guatemala.html
The Daily Fail, eh? They managed to get the basic climactic element of the match wrong, saying the Guats scored on a penalty late. For an English publication, to mistake a PK for a standard DFK is pretty...well...US media-like. And, in true Fail fashion, they buried contradictory information at the very, very end. Not to mention they engaged random psychotherapist-who-wrote-something-once as an authority and the whole thing had the feel of some dumb******** making shit up when quoting "people" who were upset, which is something only the Guardian typically does. I have a hard time believing this, mostly because Howard, Bocanegra, and Dempsey in particular ALWAYS make it a point to wear their love of the troops on their sleeves. I remember the pre-WC 2006 friendly in Europe (in K-town, I believe, maybe even in the snow) where there were a shedload of troops and dependents at the match. Dempsey scored and the whole team ran over to the US section and saluted very respectfully. I recall they lingered after the match in front of the section, as well.
(Obviously several days late, but for future reference...) There's a parking lot a few blocks north at Xenos Church. I've parked in front of the church with no problems. 15th Avenue, east of 4th does not require permits, but parking there might be a bit hard to come by.
Do check the meeting schedule, though--we are not just a Sunday morning church and there are a number of well-attended evening meetings on various days of the week plus a free clinic among other events (can't say exactly, as I attend at the north facility in the 43229 and not this one). The lot is actually for the entire center, which the church owns.
