Even these pictures are a tad dated because if I recall correctly, they finally finished off the pressbox and suites. Can anyone from WNY clarify? I've been to Paetec Park, or what's now called First Mariner something something, it's really excellent.

Ahh, typical LA football stadium: dig a hole and put stands on it. :p

That's not meant to be a burn. I actually like the idea where it's feasible. It eliminates questions on structural integrity. It's the same way they built the Rose Bowl and the Coliseum. Even the planned Los Angeles Stadium in City of Industry uses the concept.

I agree. And it makes sense size-wise (10,000) as well as in terms of location. It's very convenient for a lot of soccer fans who live too far from the Home Depot Center, plus there is a great Latino population surrounding it that lives and breathes soccer everyday.

Titan Stadium carries sound very well too. Tune into the home opener May 1st 7pm est on usllive and I'm sure you will hear us load and clear. (if the audio is working of course).

A great soccer venue with some history. With both the Salsa and Galaxy Open Cup games. Maybe you should try an Alexi Lalas night and get him to re-create the run up the hill. LOL

Virginia Beach Sportsplex, home of the Virginia Beach Piranhas, and also home to the late Virginia Beach Mariners and SubMariners.

"SubMariners"? Cute. Nice place, though. Is that where the Tuskers are gonna play next year? :p

Also, I measured Titan Stadium on Google Earth. They actually have a soccer pitch lined out there in the overheads they use. SCORE! It measured 120x76. So definitely no size problem there.

Stands are up at the new river plate stadium, still missing the field

Maybe they can borrow the AstroTurf that Buddy ripped out of the Citrus Bowl? :p

are they going with grass or turf?

I know they did the Turf in Wilmington in about 30 days but that included ripping out the grass and a lot of grading and compacting the sub soil.

Another view of City stadium(Richmond Kickers home). Honestly its been around since like 1920-30. We need to really get our own stadium(soccer specific).

This is from 2004, but I was there last year, it looks basically the same:

In your case, probably rebuilding City Stadium would suffice. By that, I mean tear down the old stand, build a new one, then tear down the newer stand (the straight one), and building a new one.

I don't think our fans would mind that. The stadium itself is in a great area. There's multiple ways to get to and from the stadium so traffic is pretty good. VCU has a 5,000+ seat soccer specific stadium down the street(Very nice atmosphere too) but its next to the baseball stadium so traffic would really suck if both played at the same night. Honestly we should consider just making like a horseshoe shape or stands on three sides. We could keep the open side for ones that like the grassy hill overlooking the stadium. We could always play at VCU's stadium during the construction(probably 1 to 2 years if that if we do fast construction)

I could be wrong but I believe that the Mariners played in the old A- league while the minus 23 team named the Submariners played in the PDL

I was aware they had a youth academy (anybody who's been in the USL forums a significant amount of time does), but that is a nice facility for them.

That's why I suggested a phased construction. Since City Stadium is in two pieces, there's no reason why they couldn't build one side, then the other.

Is there any reason Richmond doesn't just use VCU's stadium instead of the City Stadium? The size would seem to be more appropriate.

It's right next to the baseball stadium, traffic would be a nightmare or require some very nimble scheduling. They're also primary tenants at City Stadium now that the Spiders are on campus, I believe.

Five of the Kickers' home games in 2012 are on the same nights as Flying Squirrels' games. This Saturday is one. Just for comparison.
