Apparently a lot of people think the current US Soccer crest is outdated, and some have even started a petition to permanently change the federation's crest to the one that USMNT and USWNT players wore on their jerseys throughout most of 2013 in celebration of the USSF's 100th Anniversary. (See links for more information.) http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...occer-outsider-on-u-s-soccers-terrible-crest/ http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/artic...ennial-crest-better-original-nows-your-chance http://wrongsideofthepond.com/2014/01/17/the-makeover-that-never-was/ So should US Soccer keep its current crest? And if not, to what should the federation change it?
It may just be my backwards thinking and horrible taste, but personally I like the current crest. I like its unique, distinctive look, and that it's not just a shield-shaped rotation of the American flag. The liberties that the designers took with the number of stripes, the number/design of stars, and the color reversal seem to make it more aesthetically pleasing. That isn't to say that the crest couldn't use some periodic updates [perhaps more than just the slight coloration change that US Soccer made for 2014], but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the core of the current design. Though I might be the only one who thinks so... I think the use of the centennial crest was as a great tribute to the federation's anniversary, the original crest, and the flag that American soccer athletes have been playing under for over a century. But as a permanent crest for the team, to me it would seem, as patriotic as it is, a little bland and unoriginal. I think any nation's crest should be more than just the country's flag in a different shape. One of the issues that the third article brings up its the centennial crest's questionable recognizability as the symbol of a soccer team. I would be open to a completely new design, but I would want it to celebrate the spirit of the sport and the team as well as that of the country.
