From the president of the Ecuadorean Federation

I'm confused by the use of the word opening. Borg seems to think this means that the entire tournament will be held outside of South America although it sort of reads to me as just some group stage games would be played north of the Panama canal.

Here's the Spanish for any native speakers:

"Con una eliminatoria previa en Concacaf para ver cuales son los seis. Vamos a tener la apertura para que no sea en los 10 países de Sudamérica, podría ser México, Estados Unidos podría también", destacó.

Also the the 2nd guest invite for the 2015 tournament in Brazil will either go to Japan or the US.

So this would be an "odd" year Copa. A special edition to commemorate 100 years without any implication for the winner (no confederations cup birth).

I think CONMEBOL is looking at the money the World Cup gets for US TV rights and thinking that they might want to generate similar interest for Copa in the states.

Reading the original spanish, I think it means that the "aperture" or opening tournament will be held outside of Copa AMerica only, not the whole tourney.

I don't read it like that, but to be honest I can't make much sense of it.

We will see. But, I think CONCACAF is about to split apart at the confederation Congress in January 2013. I just get the impending sense that something big is in the works. From the way the Caribbean has been shut out of all CONCACAF affairs and isolated, the constant delay in holding any elections to fill open offices or hold any special confederation wide meetings, to the way the television and federation execs from Mexico and some of the other Central American federations have spoken publicly, to Chuck Blazer's resignation and departure as the confederation's General Secretary. All of those actions are pointing to a group of people who don't expect to be doing business with the Caribbean Football Union much longer. If there is any negotiation going on between CONMEBOL and North America to hold a special tournament in 2016 the Caribbean is not being included in it, because the Caribbean hasn't had any representation on the confederation's Executive committee for the last 6 months.

There are a couple of problems:

1)There currently is no 2016 Copa America. It hasn't even been announced that they are planning on holding one.

2)It would be going against Euro 2016.

3)CONMEBOL has typically already started World Cup qualifying by that point in the qualifying cycle. Of course, if CONMEBOL is about to become an 18 nation confederation instead of 10 it would have an entirely different qualifying structure.

This is all for money, but it would be awesome if USA could be a host for the Copa America, we got the stadiums for it. As whitecloud said, CONCACAF might split apart by 2013, a merge with CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, might be possible, USA and Mexico could be part of CONMEBOL and let the islands have their chance at the qualifying and World Cup rounds. At least that's my thinking..and I'm to tired to think more than a paragraph.

Tener la apertura - is saying that the inaugural edition of this new tournament will be in North America.

Got say I called this in another thread a few months ago. We need a tournament to match the Euro Cup and this is it. Since it's kept the name of Copa America it still gets billed as the oldest tournament in the world. With US and Mexico you get a huge TV market and now you have 16 countries making the group phase more challenging. It's gonna be big!

Why would we have a problem?

It keeps the name of the oldest tournament in the world. The tournament name happens to be Copa America so it extends it to it's logical maximum. Having 16 teams makes it so much more interesting. Sounds like good stuff to me.

North America and Central America have 10 countries combined which would make 20 when combined with CONMEBOL. You said 18, so are you proposing two countries like Canada, Belize, and Nicaragua compete against the Carbibean rather than in the new CONMEBOL?

I doubt anyone would be left out. It would be 20 teams. You'd need some sort of qualifying tournament to cut it down to 16 teams. Based on FIFA rankings, Honduras, Costa Rica, Canada, El Salvador, Guatemala, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Belize would partake in those qualifiers with Honduras, Costa Rica, Canada, and El Salvador favored to go through.

Guatemala, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Belize would miss the final tournament more often than not.

So what exactly would happen to the Caribbean countries? They can't just disappear off the face of the earth, are they just going to be their own confederation? Like Oceania. You'll have the World Cup with teams from the Americas, Europe, Caribbean, Asia and Africa?

My guess is they'll be like the new Oceania after Australia left. I wouldn't be shocked if the Caribbean winner played the Ocenia winner in a playoff, with the winner of that playing the 4th or 5th place team from another confederation for a WC berth.

Lol, so basically Jamaica vs New Zealand every year for a world cup birth. Or I guess a playoff, Jamaica vs Trinidad for the rights to play New Zealand.

That makes more sense than watching Carribbean minnows lose by 9+ goals to the USA and Mexico in World Cup qualifiers.

As long as we could host and thus play Brasil on the 4th of July again.

No, according to the other poster, the winner of that game would still have to play the 4th or 5th place team from another Confederation to earn a World Cup birth.

This. CONMEBOL would have 8 World Cup births, OFC and CFU would have .25 births each

No, it means New Zealand plays Jamaica or Trinidad for a right to play Uruguay or Bahrain or Senegal or some other country.
