but a wonderful event in Newtown CT is planned.... http://www.bigapplesoccer.com/leagues/mls2.php?article_id=32551
It was Chris' idea since he grew up not far from there. He kinda put it together himself for the community.
Why didn't MLS take the lead on this? For the simple reason that in some instances, discretion is the better part of valor; it's hard to come across as sincere (in the age of commercialism) by announcing to the world that you're putting together an event to honor the memories of those lost and help out in the healing process. Look no farther than WWE which, for all of the flak they've received over the years for their storylines, work extensively with groups such as Make-a-Wish. You won't see them making announcements or trying to draw attention to it...they just do it to help others. When my daughter was staying at Kosair Children's Hospital for a month after she was born, my wife actually met a wrestler (I believe it was Mick Foley) who was there to visit sick kids (she said he seemed rather nervous but was very polite and sincerely wanted to be there.) In this case, I would sincerely hope that, if the league is even aware of the event taking place, they are letting the other players in the league know about it and encouraging them to participate.
The Dynamo are sending some players up there too. Ching, Davis and Hall IIRC. EDIT: Link Add Corey Ashe and Ricardo Clark, along with Team President Chris Cannetti (who is from the area) to the list.
According to this article on MLSSoccer.com, Cannetti is the main organizer. Players from 11 MLS teams plus "legends" from both the men's and women's NTs are participating.
I not a big fan of sports leagues boosting their public image this way. Soccer can't bring those kids back.
Another reason the league did NOT do this. It was done by the President of the Dynamo because he is FROM the area. He is using the things he knows best, sports, to provide a day of fun for the community. If it were truly a bit PR stunt, it would be open to the public.
