The last 45 minutes of the show is our Mid-Season Report Card on the team. enjoy!!
I'm maybe 10 minutes into this, and it's frustrating. It's frustrating because all four of you are spending lots of time talking about how DCU has never made money and the role that that fact plays in attracting investors and getting a stadium built. What's frustrating about that is that it's not at all clear that that's true. The soccer operations of DC United the soccer club have almost certainly never made money, yes. But that doesn't mean that Will Chang is losing money on his investment even year-by-year. You're neglecting the significant chunk of money that each investor/operator gets from SUM revenues, which aren't included in the club-specific revenue/expense figures we have on occasion seen. In past years, I've been told that even as 2/3 of the clubs in the league were in the red at that time, all of the investor/operators in the league were in the black because their share of SUM revenues were larger than their losses on the clubs' soccer operations.
I think they're pretty harsh on BMac's midseason grade. While I do think that the "ideal" pairing will eventually be Jakovic-Dudar, BMac's been a rock this season during a stretch when we had a different back 5 (goalie included) every single game. He's definitely an above average CB that would be a starter on almost every team in the MLS. IMO he deserves a B+ at the least. I also love that he always seems to be the first guy to congratulate our goalscorer even if he's all the way on the other side of the field. Kinda reminds me of Ovechkin in that sense.
Don't forget the residual from the asset (DCU) itself. That percentage gain has been on fire since AEG has started selling the teams. I think the last price was $40M and with the next one planned to be in NYC; can you say $50M+. here is a good comparison between SUM and expansion fees https://soccer.fakesigi.com/major_league_soccer_expansion_fee_revenue_sum_sale.html I give a lot of credit to the SJE group for truly building a stadium without public money or guarantees. IMO the SJE group would not be building the stadium unless money could be made. It would be interesting to see how much the Philly guys get for their contribution.
If B-Mac spent less time just kicking the ball blindly up field like a 10 year old he would get a better grade.
Fair enough - but I think what I was trying to get across at least is that no one really has any idea how deep the chasm is for United in terms of their losses. It now appears according to Goff this morning that the new duo is going to help absolve some of the debt accrued over the years. This is nothing but a good thing in my mind, we were just attempting to figure out exactly how much and where money is going to be spent. thanks for listening.
Probably the best thing going for DC United is that it is in a viable market for soccer. The new investors must see that having a team based in the nation's capital, with the best winning tradition in the league and outstanding supporter's groups, are assets that will continue to increase in value in the future. Why else would they buy in?
