Ives just clarified in a tweet
"I'm hearing that if the Adu deal goes through, Union WILL be adding an accomplished international player."

Update: Ives says Freddy's heading to Brazil next week to finalize the deal. He also says that when the deal becomes official, the Union WILL add "an accomplished international player".

Hopefully they don't mean Nicolas Medina. A creative attacking midfielder to give service to the forwards would be a huge boost.

We can only pray, I've become so jealous of other teams because of Valeri and Kobayashi.

"accomplished international player" sounds like Kafes, the Greek Int. that was with us in preseason.

Since Medina was hurt more than he played at the camp in Philly, he does not seem to be an option. I agree that an experienced playmaker is needed. With Adu's salary cap hit off the books, I would expect Ansaldi to at least be scouting Argentine 2nd Division games for such a player as opposed to his usual Argentine 3rd division games.;)

Hopefully this doesn't drag out, it would be a nice St Paddy's day present to have the transfer go through this weekend. Extremely interested to see who they might be targeting to bring in and when. If it is soon then it is either a free agent or from a N/S. American team.

Assuming the Adu-to-Bahia deal goes through, Ives is claiming the cap relief would allow the team to sign "an accomplished international player".

Let's try not to focus on a bumbling, unambitious FO. Nor should we discuss any pie-in-the-sky wish list type of star players. I'm thinking this would be someone akin to Paunovic, or maybe even Kafes (since he seemed to show well during the preseason).

    What say you?

    -EDIT-

Just merged many/most of the relevant posts into together with the premise that a discussion about someone of this caliber/quality deserved its own thread.

I'm imagining someone in the Paun mold. Not a bad thing. But not exactly "head spinning."

Although I'm thrilled for the possibility of moving Adu to Bahia... I almost dread the end result if he does leave. We'll be weeping and gnashing about how poorly the Sack manages the extra cap money. No one is going to jump for joy over a Kafes-type of signing.

A report in Brazil says that the deal with Bahia involves a player swap with Adu taking a lower salary at Bahia. I believe that the swap is why Ives was able to say that there WILL be an accomplished player going to the Union. While Adu would go to Bahia, going the other way would be:

Jose Kleberson Pereira (known as Kleberson)

He certainly fits the "accomplished international description" and it seems that it could be swap of players who did not meet the team's expectations (Kleberson is making $1.2M/year so it would be interesting to see how the $ shake out for both players if this swap does indeed happen - both teams think that their respective player is overpaid and is otherwise stuck with them until December 2014 in both cases). Adu would join right back, Neto, at Bahia, who played at Aris in Greece when Adu played there. Going back to Hack's pre-season comment about bring in a veteran to help take some of the load off M. Farfan in terms of midfield playmaking, Kleberson fits that role better than trialist Kafes who played more of a deep-lying role. I could see Kleberson playing that CM role that most of us thought Okugo would take this season when Soumare would start at CB (something that keeps looking more and more questionable as time goes on). Another interesting thing will be if/how much Ricardo Ansaldi is involved in this deal given that Brazil is one of the countries in which he has lots of contacts. If he is able to broker a deal in which Adu and his salary go and a veteran midfielder like Kleberson arrives - Ansaldi would have to get some props for his efforts since you just do not see player swaps happen between leagues.

Here is the skinny on Kleberson:

Central Midfielder (also can play AM and DM - more offensive than defensive these days due to his versatility - more of a CM/DM during his early days. More or less, he is a two-way box-to-box CM - more deep-lying than a true AM who plays at the top of a diamond midfield).
    5'9" - 148 lbs.
    Born: 6/19/79 (33 years old)
National Team: 32 caps for Brazil, 2 goals (last cap was in 2010 World Cup, World Cup winner in 2002 - assisted on 2nd goal in 2-0 final win over Germany)
Clubs: Bahia (current), Flamengo, Atletico Paranaense, Besiktas (Turkey), Manchester United

In a bit of irony, Kleberson's transfer to Manchester United back in 2002 still makes Top 10 EPL Transfer flop lists - preseason Union trialist, Nicolas Medina, and his transfer flop to Sunderland in the same time frame makes similar EPL bust lists. Kleberson went to Man U for 6 million pounds after the World Cup but injuries and poor form (somewhat blamed due to inability to adapt to life in England) limited in his 2 years there.

Here is the report of the Adu for Kleberson swap:

    http://www.galaticosonline.com/noti...o-bahia-sai-kleberson-e-entra-freddy-adu.html

The North American press nails that the half one Freddy Adu, that at present acts for the Philadelphia Union, is of ready suitcases for sign with the Bahia. Adu would be of journey marked for Savior inside a week for sign with the team and do physical examinations. However, does not treat barely of a new contracting in the Bahia, but also a way of itself free of a "bomb" of the team. Information of wings that arrived to the editing of the Bocão News notice that the transaction with the North American would be, in fact, an exchange of athletes. At the same time in that Adu would arrive in the Fazendão, the half Kléberson would be given up to the soccer of the United States. Of this way, the salary of R$ 180 thousand of the pentacampeão would be withdrawn of the tricolor bill. The journey is ideal for Adu as also for the American team, that does not go well of the legs and has in the player of 23 years his bigger salary. Second account of the North American press, the player earns a present salary of OR$ 600 thousand. On the other hand, the relief of them yourself count of the Bahia does not give the American the illusion of that would receive this devised acting in the Fazendão. It is probable that the salary of the athlete in the team be well more modest, visa the relief that the exit of Kléberson would bring to them you count of the team. When it arose for the world of the soccer, to the 14 years, Freddy Adu was sung in concerns and prose in the United States as the "new Pelé" and that, in the future, would be to main weapon of the American team for defeat the World Cup. However, Adu did not avenge. In the last 9 years, the attacker passed for nine different teams and never obtained itself sign in no of them. Freddy Adu already defended teams of Portugal, France, Turkey. He was born in Desire, but was naturalized American still infant.

Another report saying that negotiations are moving ahead:

Most reports suggest the player might be Kleberson, 33 year old, former World Cup champion and primarily defensive central midfielder.
