Nikolov is not the answer, any professional who works his whole career for one club then shifts at the end only to ride the bench isn't worthy of starting. I'm thinking a leader, like Mandragon. Or a Macedonian like Alexander the Great.
TBH, the only way the U have a different goaile in net next year is if McMath moves on to bigger things in Europe. Get used to seeing Big orange in net for a long time coming.
I think two things should be very clear about the whole MacMath-Nikolov scenario: Zac is the de facto starter on this team; Hack and Vart are very high on him. Oka was brought in to mentor/coach MacMath, ostensibly making ZM18 better, not taking his place.
Both facts have worked out stellar thus far, hence in the offseason they replace everyone you just mentioned.
Zac seems to have done better of late than he did when we were winning. They need to work on the mid field before they tear apart the goal keeping.
First off, I'm hurt that I am just "this guy", what of all our happy memories? Second, I'm aware that stats seem to indicate that MacMath is having a great fantasy year. But he isn't, his team isn't. One thing (among many) that Philly had and lost is a vet leader goalie. That isn't what MacMath is. He a slightly higher skilled Seitz.
Forgive me but that is outright laughable. Seitz not only gave up goals on a regular basis but they were mind-blowing, horrifically bad, morally deflating type goals that only Flyers fans of the Soderstrom-Roussel era can relate to. And Seitz never improved. Whatever you want to say about MacMath, he does seem to adapt. Maybe overcorrect at times, but he hasn't given up on a consistent basis the types of goals Seitz gave up regularly. It's one thing to criticize a young goalie's positioning in certain positions. It's another to see the goalie get scared by a forward five feet away to the point he drops it to said opponent's feet and watches haplessly as the ball goes in the net. As was correctly pointed out, midfield is eons ahead of goaltending as an issue on this team. And goalies have a history of developing over time and having to deal with mistakes at a young age. That's not an excuse, but it is context and allows to identify the types of mistakes being made.
I'm actually surprised Seitz hasn't come back to the Union. He was notorious for making excuses, anyone remember the "divot" that caused the ball to bounce right past him into the net? He'd fit right into the Hack scheme of excuse making and passing the buck.
This, pretty much all of this. Once Zach learns he has to be outside of the net to stop shots he'll be just fine.
I say shock collar for all of them. everytime they screw up give them a little jolt. Nowak would agree.
Not say MacMath doesn't have his issues but in the grand scheme of things any goalie concerns should be pretty low on our list of priorities....
Having seen that game live, that ball took a ridiculous bounce. I can't really fault Seitz for that one.
