it makes sense if you need to sell jersey's for 3 years before a team comes.
i'm not sure why people get worked up over this contract. Contracts aren't long term by defenition.

Fulham had a Nike contract for 4 years, and only had the kits for 3 seasons.
Manchester City had Le Coq sportif for a 4 Year contract as well.

Now, if we see that this team might not come into play until 2013/2014.
To me this just fits into place.

Nike is the manufacturer as Umbro is their UK subsidiary. Why an Umbro patch instead of a Nike swoosh? Umbro is not a big name in the US where most of these will be sold. Nike is a very smart company and if they are behind this, then you know these jerseys are going to sell.

i think they are just trying to grow the brand.
I prefer actually umbro, to both nike and adidas.
    Good designs in general.

yeah, they will have to get rid of the jersey before they join MLS Though since MLS has a deal with adidas. though its a good idea to get new york hyped up for the second team (though 3 years seems like a long time to stay hyped)

If Nike/Umbro had been hoping to bid on an MLS deal in 4 years when the deal with Adidas runs out, they will be not be happy with the news that Adidas and MLS just extended their deal another 4 years through 2018.

on a side note i really hate the league-wide deals with respect to ALL the teams in all the leagues here.

man i miss the mid-90s where teams had different sponsors. wilson, reebok, starter, nike, CCM, bauer, etc.
