To be honest he hasn't looked great in any of the 3 games. I am going to chalk it up to lack of shape in the midfield. It seems like he is at times the only one in the center of the field. Looks like he is trying to cover a lot of ground.
I've been watching the games and thought he's played pretty well. The US has outmatched its opponents in each game and has tended to press forward leaving Trapp to hold the fort. He's done so and even scored a nice volley goal off a corner kick.
This. He was OK vs. Canada. Tonight though was his best game. Very good decisions, kept the ball on the ground, and did a nice job closing down passing lanes. I thought Mikey Lopez was better than him defensively this tourney but Trapp's performance tonight was great.
Agreed. Tonight he showed the type of player he can be. I liked how he won the ball and looked to connect his next pass.
I thought Trapp got progressively better after his near two yellow performance in the second match. Very solid against Mexico. He'll be a good squad member at the U20WC
Honestly, Trapp was the class of the midfield against Mexico. Very impressive by him and the entire US team. WOW! against Mexico they were world class. Congrats to all those young men. WOW!
I thought the PK given was a bit soft but the ref seemed determined not to give another when there were a couple more clearcut penalties that went uncalled. US should have won in regulation time.
Mario Rodriguez missed a wide open header from inside the 6 yard box. Actually headed it straight down and it bounced over the goal. Shocking miss and even more shocking he didn't make the keeper make a save
If it's the one I'm thinking of, I thought the gk got a shin to it on it's way back up which was just enough to deflect it over the bar. Still.....should have scored. Game over.
The commentators credited Sanchez with the save but it resulted in a goal kick. The replay show that the keeper never touched it.
Does it bother anyone else, but while I was watching the match the other night, I wasn't sure when they said many of the US player names during the commentary whether they were talking about our players or Mexican players. Here is the lineup: USA: 1-Cody Cropper; 16-Dillon Serna, 5-Shane O’Neill, 14-Javan Torre (19-Brandon Allen, 107), 3-Juan Pablo Ocegueda; 15-Mikey Lopez, 6-Wil Trapp; 9-Mario Rodriguez, 8-Benji Joya (capt.), 17-Danny Garcia; 7-Jose Villarreal
Damn glad they're playing for us; some of them are first generation and could easily want to play for other countries. Not bothered at all, very happy. The more we pull talent from all areas of American society the better we'll be.
Not at all. There are some really good players in that list. If it helps you, you can call him Javan Tower or Benji Jewel.
Thanks. I hadn't realized that. On the other point, I think the announcers commented that some ungodly number of the 22 starters were dual nationals.
Which *is* a concern: will they stay tied to the US for the senior team?? There are notable players who played U-20s for us and then went on to represent another country at the senior level. The reverse has also happened in our favor, of course.
I guess I shouldn't have said "bother anyone else" as I was only bothered because I don't know the team well enough to know their names and I had to guess whether the announcers were talking about players on the US or Mexico side. I absolutely agree that I am glad these kids have chosen to play for the US and hope they stay loyal to that.
I didn't watch a second of the U-20's. However, I am confused. Folks on this board and in this thread say Trapp was fine, subpar, maybe one good game. Then I read online publications and basically say Trapp was the U.S. player of the tourney, Crew is lucky to have him, etc. So which is it?
I don't know if you've noticed, but Crew fans have high standards when it comes to the play of our defensive midfielders. We've gotten spoiled over the years watching the likes of Kevin Burns roam the middle of the field.
