Then it's very likely van Buyten is leaving, isn't it? Good move for Bayern but imo a bad move by Kirchhoff.. Bads, Dante and Boateng are all in my view far superior, Kirchhoff is still a nice upgrade to vBuyten as CB.

Would've been nice if it was for winter transfer.

But all the better for next season ;)

Bild says BVB and Schalke were also interested and he certainly doesn't have it that much easier if he joins one of these as both have settled in CB pairings with Hummels/Subotic and Papa/Matip

I guess they did prefer to have Kirchhoff at Mainz for another half season as a regular instead of a few games at Bayern München because he wouldn't play a role in the
    decisive games anyway.

However as Duncaon pointed out Heidel seemed to be interested in a winter deal, too.

In general I honestly don't know what Kirchhoff amounts to. How good is he? I can't say.

Medical will take in the next few days so I think there is chance to make the transfer happen in winter if Mainz is willing to and is approaching Bayern now and it is also the only way for them to get at least some money

I'm not sure that "hammer" is quite the right adjective.

He's a good young player, still raw, but definitely has the talent for a bigger team. Don't know if this is the best move for him though. Hope he knows he's coming to be a backup and not much else.

If he comes in the winter window. He will have more playing time then expected.
    Boetang CL r16 suspension.
    Dfb pokal games
    League games...

Badstuber out for the season. Dante 2yc in the CL..

Anything can happen throughout the 3 comps that will warrant another CB this year..

But I don't know the details of this transfer, so I can't assume.

Certainly an upgrade over DvB and I think he have what it takes to succeed in the years to come ...

I just don't understand why he won't come right away. Given that he isn't cup tied, and our current situation in the back four, he could come in now ...

Then again we heard the same about Dante who was supposed to be CB #3 behind Badstuber and Boateng and now he's our chief back there.

There is no other position in the entire squad with as high a chance to make it in the starting eleven as in the central defense. Boateng is still under "probation" after he was partially blamed by management and JH for the CL final loss. Moreover he looked shaky since his comeback.

Doesn't mean anything if he regains his form but in case Kirchhoff can make the breakthrough at a time Boateng doesn't perform...Kirchhoff has little to lose but so much to win because his contract only lasts til 2016 and plenty other clubs will be interested should his stay at Säbener Straße fail.

So we've a highly motivated, gifted young CB who's gonna heat up the competition even further and little to lose.

Kirchhoff told his club Mainz05 in late December that he wouldn't renew his contract but he had a lot of offers to consider. Plan his future as a player, not an easy decision. So even though manager Heidel immediately signaled that the club would be open for talks concerning a winter transfer it is fair to assume that Kirchhoff just didn't know where he'd sign at the time. Ergo no time to make a winter transfer. Since January 1st Kirchhoff was allowed to sign a new contract with another club because the FIFA regulations allow this 6 months prior to the expiration of a players contract. He decided for Bayern München and signed the contract now because he has to go to the Mainz05 training camp soon.

1: We either decided it was best for him to stay as a regular for Mainz til summer
2: Or we'd have liked him in winter but due to the time factor he couldn't make it to the Bayern's winter training camp in time anyway. Therefore it was decided to leave him at Mainz05.
3: We'll seal a winter transfer very soon.

Dante is different. He was a started and one of the best in the league when he came to Bayern and at the peak of his career. Kirchhoff is still very raw and had a long way to develop which makes this move so odd from his perspective.
