I bet if we had sent Hugo Ayala, Severo Meza or Torres Nilo as a refuerzo for the olympics (instead of FVCKING Salcido) they would be in Europe by the end of the summer.
I don't understand all the hate being directed towards Salcido. As an Americanista it pains me to admit it, but he is one of the best players Mexico has produced over the past 20 years. He is versatile, quick, strong, consistent, and has sacrificed a lot for the good of the national team. Personally, I think he was a great choice. Other than Zavala, I don't think that there is a better defensive mid-fielder for the scheme that Tena is going to incorporate.
If and when those guys, or any other Mexican player, make it to Europe, it won't be because of how they played in the Olympics or the Gold Cup. Teams don't really buy players based on four, five or six game tournaments. Can anyone name the last big transfer that occurred because a player had a good Olympic tournament? Herrera sure as shit ain't going to transfer to Europe based on his Olympic Qualifier, Toulon or Olympic Tournament performances. They may be a plus but any team with a decent scouting network will be more interested in what Herrera does every week at Pachuca than one off showings at the U23 international level. Hate is a bit of a strong word but it is not misdirected. Salcido is past his prime and since the speed of play is slower in Mexico, Tuca can get away with moving Salcido to a holding position with varying degrees of success (depending completely on your definition of success.) In all the games Salcido has played as a DM with the senior NT, he has never really looked comfortable or stood out. His positioning is always off, he doesn't fully understand the pulley effect in the center of the field, his passing is awful; not to mention his passing range and he's often caught flat footed in transition. In short....mehh
Without a doubt Salcido is one of the top players of the last 10yrs and will go down as one of the "historicos" with el tri, but he's been on a downward spiral. I don't think i can remember any good game from him with el tri post 2010 Hi's league form is not great either. I would have preferred Zavala because he's a younger guy that will feature in mexicos plans for the next wc and this would have given him experience. While i don't think the gap between both of them is that great, Zavala is a better option imo; He's a better passer, taller, covers a lot more ground. However, I can see how Salcidos experience could help the team. All in all, it's not a terrible to bring him, but i think Zavala would have been a better option. Talking about the olympics here.
I seem to recall a few weeks ago Martinez saying in a radio interview that neither Herrera nor Bueno were ready to make the jump and they would both be staying at Pachuca for at least a year.
Guille is gone, but Esqueda is ahead of him I think. Either way he's better of staying one more year at Pachuca. He will see plenty of minutes in Cup play and get the needed experience. Did you expect him to play over Suarez/Carroll/Gerard at Liverpool??? if he even makes the bench.
Rondon for gio + cash? http://www.adifferentleague.co.uk/p6_72_15798_tottenham-move-for-malaga-striker-rondon.html
I have to disagree here. In a 4-4-2 (or 1-1 however you want to call it) a DM's main responsibility is to ensure that the other team's players (other than the forwards of course) don't get ahead of the first line of 4. Throughout all the games that I have seen of him play in the midfield, I have seen him chase down a player from behind maybe a handful of times. Meaning that he is almost always in the right position to ensure that the other team's players don't have 1 on 1 options. Obviously you are right about the fact that he is slower (although he is not a slow player), but good positioning can make up for lack of speed. You are also correct with your point about not being an great passer playing in the mid-field. Yet, I would consider him a very good passer when he plays on the wing (granted it isn't the position he will be playing). Salcido affords Fabian and Herrera the flexibility to attack freely without hesitating because they know that Ponce and Salcido can make up for a lot of errors. One last point I want to make is that even though Salcido has not scored many goals, he has a very good outside shot. In close games, this could mean the difference between a win and a loss. It is normal for people to view things differently. I don't see bad positioning by Salcido, but maybe I just haven't been paying close attention.
It's safer to base a purchase on long term performance than on a particular tournament, but that doesn't mean that's an ironclad policy from which no club ever deviates. Clubs are run by people and sometimes people take risks. If the price is right, and the tournament performance is impresive enough, and there are potential rivals asking about the same player, somebody might take a chance. There's a joke about an economist not picking up a dollar bill off the street because he assumes that if it were really a dollar bill, somebody would have picked it up already. Don't assume everything in the transfer market is always efficient and rational.
I'm probably missing the point here, but I'm an economics major and I didn't pick up two dollar bills I walked past in downtown Houston a few weeks ago.

I don't think that Meza is European material. Aldo has what it takes, but I just don't see him leaving anymore.
You are probably right, yet the more I see him he has great first touch, speed and decision making, what he lacks is physical presence. /p
I can see Aldo leaving in the January transfer window after the Club World Cup, especially if he has a good start in the first half of this season.
