Wow great research Lucas! Marcelino was a great FK but could not realize he got 80, same with Zico and Juninho?

Marcelinho was really good at the peak. I don't doubt (+80FK goals). When I have time, I intend to search every game played for Corinthians. Then I'll know if it really has officially 80FKs, which were scored in competitive games or friendlies. So far I've only news sources - ''Marcelinho have 58FK goals in Corinthians'', but nothing detailed (dates and teams).

Hi Lucas, I was just going over one of your older posts regarding Maradona's free-kick goals in Coppa Italia, and I saw that you counted this one...

    24/01/1990 Napoli 1 x 1 Fiorentina - FK GOAL

But in the video it shows Maradona scoring a (very good) goal from open play, starting at around 0:46. So he should have 10 FK goals instead of 11.

Let's take Beckham as another typical example that many young pundits "THINK" he was the best FK (or among very best ) of history??? (not in my TOP5 surely, probably barely TOP10)

    In the LEAGUE ONLY:
    - ManU:--19FK /265games
    - Real:-----8FK/116Games
    - MILAN--1FK/29games
    - Galaxy--6FK/71games
    - PSG-----0FK/10games

Total LEAGUE FK goals career: DAVID BECKHAM 34 FK goals/481games (ratio ~ 7% )
(all career NT + friendlies + clubs Beckham got 60+ up to now)

May I point to the following website, which offers books on Argentine professional club football from 1931 to 1989. The books they have on sale (which buyers can acquire as PDFs) are the fruits of a 30-year-long research. They are tremendously detailed. Many goals scored in Argentine club football have a description.

    http://www.estadisticasfutbolargentino.com/

The $-prices you see there are Argentine Pesos. For those interested in historic football statistics, it is hands-down the best available source for Argentine club football.

May I post some excerpts. These PDFs are a great search tool. For example, freekicks can be easily found by searching for "tiro libre".

@Gregoriak, this is amazing. I really appreciate it. Thanks a lot. We can know how many FK goals Maradona scored in Argentinos Juniors, plus goals from other players. Well, I'll try to buy one of these PDFs over the months, I hope. If have any Argentinian in forum who has the PDF or is willing to buy, feel free to contribute in the thread.

Great Thread. Can you post a final list?

I think C.Ronaldo has more than 40 now.

    And Ronaldinho 64 or more.

    Pirlo like 44 i think.

What about Alvaro Recoba, anybody knows?

Taken from the aforementioned PDFs these are Maradona's stats from 1977 to 1981 (I have combined the numbers of Metropolitano and Nacional championships):

    1977

    19 goals in total:
12 using his foot from open play
    2 headers
    2 penalties
    3 free-kicks

    1978

    25 goals:
14 using his foot from open play
    1 header
    6 penalties
    4 free-kicks

    1979

    26 goals:
15 using his foot from open play
    0 headers
    7 penalties
    4 free-kicks

    1980

    43 goals:
25 using his foot from open play
    4 headers
    5 penalties
    9 free-kicks

    1981

    28 goals:
13 using his foot from open play
    2 headers
    9 penalties
    4 free-kicks

    141 in total:

79 using his foot from open play
    9 headers
    29 penalties
    24 free-kicks

He scored two goals in 1976 but it is not specified what kind of goals that were.

Thanks, I guess we can now total all maradonas free kicks from senior "official" matches

    Argentinos juniors: 20
    Boca juniors: 5
    Barcelona: 5
Napoli: 27 (I include a deflected one vs milan that officially wasn't given to him, a indirect one vs juventus and a corner kick vs lazio)
    Sevilla: 1
    Argentina NT: 4

    Total: 62

Comparatively, if lucas Gomez stats on zico were totally comprehensive zico had also, 62, in official games. (Funny coincidence)

Not that I think the unofficial matches should be disregarded. With maradona I can think 11 more in unofficial friendlies that have already been mentioned here or that I've seen, so at least 73 but in total still is a mystery. And another 4 including for the Argentina youth NT. As said previously, zico has 80 overall (or a bit more?)

I'm curious what is ronaldinho on now and what amount in official games?

    Juninho? Platini? Beckham? Ect

It would be nice to have two lists for all of them:

    1. Overall total free kicks scored
    2. The ones scored in official senior matches

Free kicks per game might be interesting, although I'm not precisely sure what it would prove. At first glance counting official games zico and maradona seem to have a better looking free kick to career appearances ratio than the likes of Beckham, juninho, and ronaldino. I might check that in more detail some time

I know this post was very old now but I was reading through this thread and your question can be answered properly, now that light has been shone on his early years. In total official games he scored 30 free kicks by the age of 23. 10 in one year in 1980 when he was 19 (including the NT). So I guess with him he was just a natural with it from a young age

Thanks a lot, @Gregoriak . An immense contribution.

    Wellington, Maradona scored 6 FK goals at Boca Juniors. Here is the list;
21/06/1981 Boca Juniors 4x0 San Lorenzo METROPOLITANO
11/10/1981 Boca Juniors 7x1 San Lorenzo LP NACIONAL
14/10/1981 Boca Juniors 3x1 Estudiantes LP NACIONAL
01/11/1981 Boca Juniors 2x2 River Plate NACIONAL
    08/09/1981 Boca Juniors 2 x 1 Milan FRIENDLY
15/10/1995 Boca Juniors 1x0 Argentino Jrs. APERTURA

24-26 official FK goals in Napoli (14-16 in Serie A and 10 in Coppa Italia @Skorenzy thanks!).

Interestingly the issue of age. Diego Maradona with 21 years had 30 free-kicks goals (24 Argentinos, 1 Argentina NT, 5 Boca Juniors). Zico only reached that number in 1978; Juninho Pernambucano in 2004, with 29 years old. And both Brazilians surpass the numbers of Maradona.

BTW, Juninho scored at least 79 free kick goals and almost all were in official games. I do not know how many goals he scored in friendlies with Lyon.

PS: Funny thing is that many of the players have no idea of their own statistics. This statistics seems interesting only for certain types of fans. Sometime ago I heard Juninho say "I think I scored 50/60 FK career goals, I do not have the exact number!"

Hey guys, I just wanna say that this thread it absolutely awesome!

Anyway, I try to sort out a problem of my own. I'm a huge fan of Atlético de Madrid and right now I'm trying to find out who scored the most free kick goals for the club. I suppose it would either be Luis Aragonés or Milinko Pantic since they are the two most famous takers in the club's history. But I can't find any sources to confirm it. Would someboddy help me please?

    Many thanks!

Hi, guys! Very interesting this discussion. There have been real freekick beasts around the world. Here, in my country, Greece, there was Kostas Frantzeskos, an exceptional freekick taker, able to score from both short and long distance. There are officially registered ''only'' his 32 freekick goals for PAOK Salónica during the 2,5 years he played there (from January 1997 to June 1999); for the rest of his teams he scored between 25 and 40 freekick goals (including a corner kick when he was playing for OFI Crete), depending of the source (However, I think it would' t be very hard to find the precise number of his total freekick goals).
Despite he couldn't gain international reputation, Frantzeskos holds the world record of 14 freekick goals in a single league season (1996-97) and shares the record of 3 freekick goals in a single match with Sinisa Mihajlovic.

Here is also a video with some of his freekick goals.
