Top 40? Like in KIIS FM or KBIG? I am so out of the loop in today's pop music and from what I gather from others, it's mainly crap. I see this names like Justin Beiber and Ke$ha (Seriously? A dollar sign in the name?) and don't reallly care to know what they sound like. I mainly listen to my iPod fill with punk, ska, Johnny Cash or old school rap.
Alright, then. Local bands? Happy Hollows seemed to take LA by storm for a bit a few months back. Sunset junction was better this year than years past. FYF has a decent lineup.
I'm going to ATP in New York at the end of the week. -Explosions in the Sky, Iggy & the stooges, scientists, hallo gallo, f**k buttons, tortoise, sonic youth, GZA, raekwon, SunO))) and so many more! Also gonna see Red Bulls v. Colorado and catch the red-eye back.
One local band that's internationally huge in the ska scene is Hepcat. Freakin' love them. Haven't been to their shows in ages but they always put on a good show.
Don't know what FYF is, but years ago I used to live not too far from the Sunset Junction (where Sunset meets Hollywood). I loved that neighborhood and loved that festival. Way back when, some friends of mine started S.L.A.M. -- The Silver Lake Area Militia and we pitched in and set up a recruiting table at the Sunset Junction festival, complete with "training camp video." Sadly, many folks took the bait. We had cool T-shirts, though... As for music, I dig it. (I'm the mod for the BigSoccer music forum as well...)
ok so when i was brought to the states, i came to los angeles, and lived there for 3 years and then moved to columbia, sc which it was a big mistake by my parents. 6 years living in sc and i still feel more connected to los angeles and california and i go there every chrismast. that being said. since i've been hangin with a lot of europeans here due to the fact that not many people here knows anything about california, i've been exposed to a lot of techno and trance music lately. last time i was talking to one of my friends, he told me that any time he heard chilippepers he remembers me hahaha good days in los angeles. i have been exposed to all kinds of music but i still stick to spanish rock, punk in english and spanish and some cumbia in the mix bc that is my root. very little rap or regueton for me but im trying to avoid, too much violence on the lyrics.
The NPR station? Do they play music? I thought they were just talk radio. I'm guessing they play indie kind of music then?
Isn't this the station that shows up on a lot of artist's albums? "live on KCRW" I know at least one Ben Folds song, and I think Mates of State...I've gotta look into it
Yeah, KCRW(89.9) has all types of lesser known bands rollin' through their studio. Morning Becomes Eclectic has had some great performances. KPCC(89.3) sponsors some great live shows at Royce Hall on the UCLA campus. I'm a fan of KXLU (88.9) LMU's college radio. Mid-weekdays are great for local, independent music. The Part-time Punks segment is always fun. They put on shows at the Echo in Echo Park. There are a few cool spaces that have opened up in downtown proper in the past few years. The LA art and music lifestyle/scene has been blowing up all over the place the last few years.
