Tony DiCicco talks about leaving the Boston Breakers, new head coach Lisa Cole, GM Andy Crossley's departure, the future of the Breakers and WPS, and the new MLS interest in affiliating with women's teams. Tony DiCicco departs Boston Breakers, Lisa Cole now head coach: Interview
If Lisa Cole is the "only female coach in WPS," then what does that make Abby? The "only player coach in WPS"? Congratulations PHILADELPHIA INDEPENDENCE WPS Finalists 2010, 2011 Foes: Newark, New Jersey, aka NYRB
hykos1045, Lisa Cole is the only woman coach by trade with the required coaching credentials currently exclusively working as a coach in WPS. Cole holds a USSF “A” license and NSCAA Premier Diploma and is an NSCAA staff coach and member of the Region I Olympic Development Program staff. Prior to the Breakers, Cole was assistant coach at Florida State, head coach at University of Rhode Island, assistant coach at the University of Connecticut, and president and assistant coach of SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds of Women’s Premier Soccer League. Wambach assumed coaching responsibilities after owner Dan Borislow was banned from the sidelines and refused to hire a legitimate coach. Any player on a WPS team probably could coach a team, but that doesn't qualify them as a professional level coach, which takes years of training and requires skills beyond playing ability. It was heroic of Wambach to assume those responsibilities after returning from an exhausting World Cup. Wambach probably will become a coach some day, but hopefully not for many years as she still has a long, exciting playing career ahead of her. Here's an interview with Lisa Cole.
The interview does not say "only licensed female coach in WPS," so maybe it should, for the sake of correctness. I meant no slight to Abby, my favorite American hero. Congratulations PHILADELPHIA INDEPENDENCE WPS Finalists 2010, 2011 Foes: Newark, New Jersey, aka NYRB
