This is a disgrace they must be out of their heads

Does not mater the Togo team was told to fly to their base by the Angolans, and they ignored them and went by bus , but when 3 people lose their lives and bullets fly over the heads of the survivors, you can not expect the team to play as if nothing has happened no team would perform

It's beyond disgraceful. Hayatou and CAF have blood on their hands from scheduling games in Cabinda. Instead of apology, Togo gets a ban. I hope whoever wins the final refuses to shake Hayatou's and dos Santos' hands. Hayatou and everyone on the CAF executive committee should be sacked today.

One of the most disgraceful and incomprehensible things I've ever seen in football. Instead of a groveling apology from those with blood on their hands (CAF, organizing committee), Togo gets a ban?!!!

The Togolese are nothing but drama queens. First they threatened to leave World Cup in Germany, then were banned from hosting qualifiers due to violence and now violated security restrictions by taking a bus through half the continent and into Cabinda!
And really what war zone is there in Cabinda? Who is fighting against whom? The bus was attacked by bandits coming from Congo-Brazzaville.
The punishment may be too severe, but government interferance in football is a real issue in Africa.

I think Togo's government is to blame, they shouldn't have interfered.
But it's still a harsh decision because not the government but the national team is punised.

It is, but the rules are quite clear about political influence. It doesn't matter if the government were "right" in this case (I think they were entirely justified in wanting the team to pull out of the tournament), you can't have governments making decisions like that. Politics and sport must be kept separate.

Did I miss something? Did CAF hand down additional sanctions other than forfeiting the games in this tourney?

If I remember correctly, CAF has also banned Togo from the next 2 African Championships [if they qualify].

    Oh, wow, that's idiotic.

Here is a ban from the tournament for getting shot at? Where's Angola's ban?

I've merged the FIFA forum thread with the one in the Africa forum, because at the moment this is a confederational issue. A thread might be appropriate in the FIFA forum later on if FIFA becomes involved.

Also, just a tip - when starting threads, please try and make the title a little more descriptive of the content. It assists other posters.

Now let your country's national team getting attacked during a major tournament ... and then let's wait up the reaction.

Under normal circumstances, politics must not have a say in sport ... but as we all know, this incident has nothing to do with "normal circumstances".

I support Togo for humanitarian reasons, a whole country should not be punished because of a tragedy.

Exactly. Togo going home was not a political decision, but a compassionate one. CAF are making themselves look like insensitive fools.

It DOES matter because it's Togo's fault that they got shot at. If they had followed instructions they would have been fine.

The ban is totally justified; Togo denied other nations a chance to compete in this tournament, by eliminating them in qualifying, and then didn't even participate themselves. That is not fair to the other nations who would have loved to compete in this event (and would have flown in and been safe for the entire tournament).

It's like if you are in a big city and trying to get back to your hotel. You know the path to walk, but it goes through a dark alley. You get warned that you shouldn't go there, it's dangerous - you should just get a taxi and you'll be fine. But you want to save a couple bucks so you walk down the alley instead. Then you get mugged and maybe shot. Who's fault is it? Yours. This is basically the same situation. Angola told Togo how to get in safely but Togo decided they wanted to save a couple bucks and take a more dangerous route. Why should Angola be punished? They told them not to "go down that alley". Why shouldn't CAF punish Togo? Togo's stupid decision ruined part of the tournament: their group opponents only got to play 2 matches each, 3 games had to be completely canceled, traveling fans who were planning on attending those matches - from both Togo and other nations - had their plans ruined... just because Togo wanted to save a couple bucks.

All this outrage should be at whoever - either in the Togo government or the Togo team - made the decision to take the bus rather than fly.
