What a really Cool game to cap the first week of games with Portland winning 3-1 over Philly. I really loved the atmosphere in Portland and the Timbers Army really do boost the Timbers offense at that end. It was pretty cool seeing Philly fans at the game and I like that about the MLS and Football (Soccer) in general have their Supporters on the road. I'm pulling for Portland to make the playoff's this year, what a season it'll be if they do...

Question for Timbers fans, do the fans always sing the national anthem or is it new? I don't know, an east coast fan jealous of the West Coast atmosphere at mls games. I can't decide if it is awesome or a way to save money or maybe somewhere in between.
Anyway, great atmosphere, American fans, this is called atmosphere, where else(sorry Timbers army, besides Seatlle) can 20,000 sound so loud? no other sport in America can say 20,000 has this volume.

In the USL days, we had a run of American Idol dropouts who would take their sweet ass time singing the anthem, so we started singing over the top of them to speed the pace along. Over time, we added the little scarf bits and it sorta became what it is today. It wasn't until last year's match against Chicago that we were the "featured singer" not being led by a debutante on a mic.

We also do O Canada when the Caps are in town.

The dirty secret is Seattle's two supporters groups are not the same size as the Timbers Army on game day. Hence, total attendance may trump the rest of MLS but they do not match the Timbers Army in raw numbers. Also, stadium wide chants include PTFC, " Portland clap clap Timbers", You cannot stop us We are the Rose City, When I root I root for the Timbers. Plus many others who just generally join in to each chant with the Timbers Army, with 4-6 more sections consistently adding to the sound next to the TA.

That is a very Cool thing with the crowd singing the National Anthems. I have to say it really sucks seeing these Celeb Singers doing the Anthems and I prefer those who are hired to sing every game like in the NHL, NLL or other Leagues. Anyway, I'm on the East Coast and you could say I'm Red Bulls fan, but honestly not having my own hometown team I support MLS league wide and the Timbers are in my Top 3 favorites...

So I thought this was going to be about the match itself. Ok, the atmosphere was awesome! I saw a couple WC womens matches there (in Jen-Wed b4 the stadium upgrades) and thought it was a great location. Glad to see the atmosphere that is the MLS on TV.

The match in the second half was very spirited and controlled by the timbers. But Philly and east coast futbol suck; so time will tell if the upgrades are positive. Good luck the rest of the season.

Funny stuff. Granted we love to sing our anthem, but when divas start doing their own editions, I just want to scream.
