the only thing that surprised me about this is that the announcement came so late. this is no shocker to anyone. Wish you the best ADP, you will always be our captain in spirit

They should set up an testimonial match at Juventus Stadium after the season. Who do you think Del Piero would pick to play against?

It's sad that he had to end his career at this form that juve's been in last few years, but nonetheless he helped us achieve alot and he'll never be forgotten. Thanks for staying with us...truly a legend of the game!

Usually a foreign team and I'm thinking Ajax which he won the CL against. A bigger foreign club like Man U would do as they problably would return the favour for Juve.

Also, I know everyone saw this coming but I was thinking why didn't Agnelli wait until like 5 or 6 games left in the season

There was a CDA meeting, so it was probably to make the announcement to the shareholders.

There is talk he will play for a foreign team before taking a role on the Juventus Board.

it would be my dream and wish for him to come play in the MLS, preferably the Red Bulls as I do not really see him going to play in any other league unless Dubai gives him millions of dollars as they did Canavarro.

Either way, he was and will always be a legend in our eyes and I see great things from him if he every became the Director at Juventus. Having people like Conte and ADP, who bleed Juve color's will help revive and continue the Juventus symbol to remain strong for years to come.

I was hoping he'd finish his career in the Juve dress and get a job in whatever function for the club afterwards.

Anyway, a true Juventus legend like Alex (who's one of my fav players ever) will never be forgotten! :)

    Mille grazie, Pinturicchio!

i dont think now was the best moment to announce that he's leaving, agnelli easily could have waited until the end of the season. i think Andrea made a HUGE mistake at saying what he said and i think this will bring more pressure to the team now that juve is at the top of the table. the timing should have been better and at the same time i dont know how this might affect the performance of del piero throughout the season and maybe the whole team too...besides, i dont think the shareholders are approving the decision...theres something fishy! lets hope for the best

a fantastic blog on why this is all wrong:

Therefore he better not go to NY because they historically, have been the leagues most mediocre franchise regardless of their many stars....

About 5 years ago during WC 06, I actually started a thread wanting Zidane, Nedved and Figo in the MLS. As time wore on, I actually stopped caring if the MLS does after these over 35's, as a matter of fact, I'd rather they didn't. I mean the league is growing and getting stronger with new packed stadiums all over the country and we need more 20 somethings as opposed to almost 40 somethings. What amazes me the most however, is how ignorant many Euro stars are towards the MLS. I mean, of course its not the EPL, La Liga or the Serie A but aside from what they may think or want to believe, its far from an easy retirement league. I've seen many foreign stars have much trouble coming state side. Also, where would an ADP play other than NY or LA? Sooner or later if these aging stars really want to come to the USA, they will have to start picking other teams. I mean there is more to North America than just NY & LA.....

I find the MLS being a real physical league which really wouldn't be ideal for older players to extend their career. To add to your point. Its seems like the players that came over during the NASL days seemed to be more successful

I want ADP and Inzaghi in Montreal! :D I would take Zambro and even Toni.

I think the EURO stars don't go to MLS because they have enough money and are tired of playing the game and its pressure.

I think ADP would want a game against Real Madrid. Maybe have Trezeguet and Nedved play for a few minutes.

My thought is also against the Madrid side. He had that great match a few seasons ago in the CL against them. Then with adidas as his sponsor, they might make it work.

It was a different time and the game has changed since then. The NASL however, had 8/9 foreign players on the pitch at all times and maybe 2 Americans at most and those players were usually reduced to playing defenders and GK's. American players are a lot better today than they were back then and are as you say real physical and the league and its clubs are much more financially sound as well as there aren't clubs coming and going as they did back in those days. They may not have the class or skill of a younger ADP or Totti or the goal scoring knack of Inzaghi, but they aren't push overs by any means either. Also, during he NASL years, you had such stars as Pele, Zungul, Beckenbauer, Rodney Marsh, Pino Wilson, Roberto Bettega, Chinaglia, Alberto , Cruyff, Best , Trevor Francis and a host of others. The MLS can only dream of players like this but also, many of those guys came in their early 30's as opposed to their late over 35's. There is a huge difference to paying the game at 32 than it is at 37/38. Beckham for example, has hardly lit up scoreboards or played with a flair that everyone thought he would. To me it makes no sense to come over and play for 1-2 years because its just a waste of time and I think clubs are reluctant to sign such players.

I'm no Juve fan or sympathizer by any means, but I think it's a bit sad seeing Del Piero leave. Makes you realize how old you've gotten.

You should be sad the game is losing a living legend. One of the greatest players in history. Probably the classiest player that ever played football and a role model for any youth.

Not so sure. IMHO, the classiest (Italian) player that ever played football in Italy was Baggio. At least Juve is giving up on a 37 year old ADP but when they gave up on a 28 year old Roby, it was a horrible mess and they shouldn't have ever gotten away with that. I still think it was a shame that managers and especially Lippi gave Del Piero so much and Baggio so little. Makes no sense now or then.

So is he implying that he would've wanted another extension? Everybody else has been well aware of when his contract ended. If that's the case, then I'm glad Agnelli ended this potential scenario before it began. A legend for the club, no doubt, but it's time to move on and find a new #10 and any potential oscillation on his part would've been an unnecessary distraction.
