This one ill-informed Clevelander I know was going off on other major cities that have not won a major Championship in a while or if ever.

The following cities are being named to CLEVELAND SPORTS HOF of LOSING! No matter the sport, when you get close to the championship you go full "Cleveland" and find the way to lose it or the championship! And you have a championship drought of 10+ years!

    Atlanta. Oklahoma City
    Houston. Seattle
    Tampa. Portland
    Oakland. Salt Lake City
    San Diego Minneapolis
    Jacksonville Orlando
    Charlotte Memphis
    Nashville Cincinnati
    Washington DC Kansas City...

When you see these cities on the players chest along with Cleveland, fear not! Your chances of winning it all improves!...

So inform him on DC United, KC Wizards (then), RSL, and Houston winning championships of their league (MLS) and then came the usual reply from an insular person:
Sorry big 4 leagues here! No likes or watches soccer like that! ...Nobody cares if MLS titles except the 10 cities that have it! All the other leagues are 50+ years or older more established! Soccer leagues come & go...

This is from a blogger of a sexy website who obviously isn't a soccer fan because the goalkeeper described is 2006 World Cup winner Gianluigi Buffon. http://www.hollywoodtuna.com/?p=87830 says:

"It’s been at least a couple days since we’ve had a no-name foreign hottie in a bikini up on the site, which is way too long if you ask me. So to make up for that, here’s Czech model Alena Seredova. Apparently she’s married to some Italian goalie. I’ve never heard of him before either, so how good could he be? I bet you could slip one past him. It’d be worth a shot at least."

It's amazing how many people think that "I don't care" and "nobody cares" are the same thing.

When I told one lady I was going to South Africa to watch soccer (said World Cup at first but she had no clue what that was) she looked at me weirdly and said, isn't soccer that "European" sport, umm don't like that. Found out later she listened to Glenn Beck so that explained a lot.

Very few people take Beck seriously. When even Fox News kicks someone off their network, you know that person is really off the deep end. He literally had shows where he wanted the overthrow of the State.

yeh and apparently had extended rants about Soccer being a "European" socialist sport, and how soccer's growing popularity was a left wing conspiracy. So not someone to be taken seriously.

But hey the advantage of people who don't like soccer is they don't like soccer so I don't have to deal with them, their loss.

What especially bothers me is how close-minded these types of people are. Why do they hate soccer so much? What is it about soccer that scares them so?

Is it insecurity? Is it the behavior of some soccer snobs in America? What is it?

In the past, many soccer proponents were from a certain segment of the US. In a lot of cases, they were people who had contempt for mainstream US culture. You still see it among some of the soccer fans in the Pacific Northwest, who have this smug attitude that by virtue of living in Portland, they're morally superior.

You can also see it on BS with posters who have contempt for other sports (like baseball), which pisses off people like me who are fans of those sports. I can imagine if you're a small town American, that type of attitude is especially infuriating.

Over time, soccer will become just another American sport and this tension will dissipate.

Funny how they call soccer a socialist sport yet have no problem with the NFL socialism.

Oh, so a lot of this stems from the pissing match between sports fans, and not so much from the "Soccer is played by Communist Leftist Pinkos from Europe" crowd.

The NFL is not socialist. It's a cartel. There's a pretty big difference.

Soccer is played by commie leftist pinkos from Europe, and some of the more douchey American soccer fans look at commie leftist pinko Europe wistfully. I can't really blame people for not liking soccer given the attitude of some American soccer fans.

There is a certain segment of American soccer fans who are very vocally anti-US sports. I have literally heard them say "Soccer is going to take over and destroy your sports" to fans of American sports. That type of fan has, IMO, done more to damage the perception and growth of soccer in the US than 100 Jim Romes could ever hope to do. Fortunately as soccer has become more mainstream, those types of soccer fans seem to be dwindling.

It's exactly the opposite. There are tons of vocal anti-soccoer American-sports fans.
Not so much vocal anti-US sports American soccer fans.
Look at the comments under soccer related articles and forums.
Soccer fans don't go to articles or forums about other American sports and act like that.
    You got it totally backward.

You've been on BS since 2002 and you've never run into soccer fans making nasty comments about American sports and their fans? Yeah, don't buy it.

You see it every time someone on here calls football "pointy ball" or some other asinine name.

He didn't say he never...but you are right about BS and the same can be said of fans of other major sports. I think we’d agree that the reality is there have been many more outspoken American soccer bashers than vocal American US-sports disparagers, especially the kind who would say,"Soccer is going to take over and destroy your sports." No reasonable person believes this will be the future sports scene, though I hope it will be, but rather likely something silly said in the heat of a discussion.
The answer to the original question of why is insecurity, or a person wanting to be controversial if they’re in the media.

A big reason they hate it is because they feel it is a girly sport, and it isn't tough and manly. The diving and players' builds contribute to this feeling.

I don't think many are "scared" or insecure. The obnoxious fans mentioned above is also a key reason.

Uh.. that doesn't really explain. They also have gridrion-football (rugby etc) all over the world especially in Europe, and they don't wear all those padding and protection.

They also don't hit as hard as they do in the NFL. The tackling is completely different with the lack of padding.

They don't because they don't have all those protection. The point is they also have something very similar. So it doesn't explain at all.

But it can explain why there are people who think soccer is a girl sport.

No it doesn't to me. Gridrion-football is not something unique to USians.
Why mostly only USians say such thing??
Also, they must think basketball is girly, too then, but never heard that.
