Some relief from the youth team winning it all after the primera squad had their toughest week since last years Bayern 7-0 aggregate. 3-0 over Benfica after winning 1-0 over Schalke. Benfica had beaten Real Madrid 4-0 in the other semifinal.

Bold prediction from youngcules on Twitter: Adama, Samper, Grimaldo, Edgar Ie, Denis Suarez - That's five players sure to be promoted to the first team, either this summer or next.

Whoa, all season I thought Eusebio was doing a lousy job with the 'B' side, and now I look at the table: 3rd!

What happened? I even thought Eusebio was close to be sacked some time back... We know they can't be promoted to Primera, but last time we had a successful 'B' team it was Pep in charge of some kids with names like Pedro and Busquets...

edit: in fact, I looked back at the season fixtures: Barca B lost 10 straight matches?!?!?! After beating mini-LPB, they didn't collect a point from Jornada 6 to 15. :alien: They have more losses (13) than all the teams from 1st on down to 12th. Craziness.

Well I don't watch enough to tell you the real low down but they are undefeated in their last 8 matches which is how they climbed from closer to last to closer to first (super tight standings you will see where the difference between relegation (40 points) and playoffs for advancing (51 points) is narrow). Contrast that with Primera where relegation is only 32 and Europa is 52, CL is 62.

Otherwise it seems like Eusebio is still loathed by many but has finally worked out a starting 11 which is high quality and regularly featured, he got Grimaldo back and is working him in, he now frequently starts Dongou or subs him in, he still does not regularly start Adama or Munir but they often feature as super subs to great effect. Other stars / possible future first teamers include the GK Masip, CB tandem of Gomez and Ie, Samper at DM (though capatin Ille Sanchez gets lots of minutes there too), Suarez and Espinosa at attacking midfield (Edu Bedia also gets minutes), aforementioned youngsters breaking in of Adama (RW), Dongou (Striker) and Munir (can play all forward spots). Bagnack (CB), Planas (fullback and CB), Sandro Ramirez and Nieto (forwards).

Lots of potential for the future; but let's hope the transfer ban is lifted (or postponed till January) as even the future stars might benefit from another year of seasoning and regular play, and we've seen how hard regular play is to come by when looking at Sergi Roberto, Montoya, Tello, Bartra when the team is not beset by injuries, JDS pre-injury, even Thiago pre-transfer.

I think if he lives up to potential, Masip could be our next longterm GK... or at least good competition for Ter Stegen.

that's what I hear too, Ondoa has great reflexes and size but is not nearly as good with his feet (at least at this point), there is another even younger guy who has great buzz but is at least 5 years away from even possibly being ready. But the real question is whether they get an experienced vet to back up Ter Stegen or just roll with Oier and Masip, the latter could be too risky (esp. as we may still see a transfer ban) but would be best in terms of development of Masip (and Oier if he stays). However if Pinto is retiring we may have no choice but to get a new Pinto (Pepe Reina is often rumored but I think he'd want to start).

Pinto would make an excellent GK coach.

Hard to believe Reina is only 31. He debuted for us in 2000! I don't know if the timing works out--we could use a solid veteran to back up MATS, but Pepe probably thinks he has another few years as a starter in him. I'd love him back if nothing else than to fill the locker-room void Pinto would leave. Oh, and for the epic MC role he plays at victory parties.

Great clip of Masip's saves, really impressive, just wish it showed a bit more of his skills with his feet and dealing with 1 on 1s (there are a couple of the latter), and dealing with crosses. But what is there is really inspiring, he is a wee bit shorter than Valdes (1.80/5'11" vs. 1.83/6'0") and far shorter than MATS (1.89/6'2.5") but his reflexes and goal awareness look great, also very composed with his defense.

A team of mostly Barca B players wins Copa Catalunya versus Espanyol - 3-2 on penalties. No first teamers this time, not even Cuenca who was there for the semifinal. Not sure if Espanyol played first teamers or not. Our squad: Masip, Ortolá, S. Gómez, Patric, Ilie, J. Espinosa, Grimaldo, Babunski, M. Bagnack, Samper, Denis Suárez, D. Nieto, Lucas, Adama, Sandro, Munir, Roger Riera, Kaptoum.

What's up with Eusebio re-signing as Barca B coach? I understand he's not a totally popular choice.

Well he definitely got great results in the 2nd half of this season. Finally starting to play more of the future cracks more often according to many. He did not overlap at Barca as a player with Luis Enrique but he was on Rikjaard's staff for Enrique's last couple seasons as a player - so perhaps they know and respect each other. There certainly were some rumors of Jordi Vinyals being the next Barca B coach as he seems more well regarded coaching one level below Barca B in La Masia.

More details from TotalBarca about the Copa Catalunya win on PKs (not sure why Masip did not play in goal but Ortola did great keeping a clean sheet and stopping 3 of 5 PKs):
Espanyol accused FC Barcelona during the week of not showing the Copa Catalunya respect by using Barça B instead of the first team. A tad rich given the side they fielded last night as well. In any case, FC Barcelona’s B side gave as much as they got versus Espanyol and won the cup on penalties after a 0-0 full time score.

Barça keeper Ortolà saved the first penalty to take an immediate advantage and then ended up saving Espanyol’s third and fifth. Patric and Kaptoum netted Barça’s first and second, but the cup was put in doubt with misses by Denis Suárez and Grimaldo. The man of the moment in the youth ranks, Munir El Haddadi, stepped up and netted the fifth penalty, winning Barça’s eighth Copa Catalunya.

FC Barcelona: Ortolá, Patric, Sergi Gómez (Roger Riera, m.86), Bagnack, Lucas, Ilie (Samper, m.46), Babunski (Adama, m.33), Denis Suárez, Dani Nieto (Munir, m.33), Espinosa (Kaptoum, m.33) y Sandro (Grimaldo, m.67).

    Hey guys,

rumor has it a Barca B central midfield talent will be joining 1860 this summer. No name so far but it is said he already played in Allianz Arena which can only be true if he played in last year's friendly there.

Any suggestions on who might not make it to the first team and is willing to leave this summer?

Sergi Roberto, Planas, Joan Roman or Espinosa?

Barca B solidly in third place but obviously cannot play in the playoff to advance to La Liga which teams in 3rd--6th place play in. Instead the 7th place team will get to participate. Eibar and Deportivo La Coruna have already assured that they will advance though Eibar may still need to raise extra capital (1.7 Million Euros) to meet new financial requirements. Down at the relegation end Real Madrid Castilla won this weekend to move 1 point clear of relegation, they finish up at Murcia (who are in the playoff for advancement) and 3 teams are just one point behind them, would love to see them get dropped. Here's a link to a summary of Barca B's crazy game 41 victory with only 10 men: http://www.totalbarca.com/2014/news/match-review-fc-barcelona-b-4-3-ad-alcorcon/#more-159245

Got my wish from the post just above; Real Madrid Castilla lost their last game 1-0 at Murcia and get relegated to the 3rd tier. Meanwhile Barca B win again and finish in 3rd place, would be in playoff for advancement but that's not allowed for B teams.

"Eusebio’s youngsters have come close to beating the all-time record of points in the team’s history in the Liga Adelante, with this year’s tally coming just 5 points short of the figure achieved by Luis Enrique’s Barça B side in 2010/11. The boys did however equal another record set by that history-making side, that of the highest league finish. The team’s final ranking in third this year equals the feat achieved 3 years ago, which is also the best finish ever achieved by a reserve team in Spanish professional football.

To make things even sweeter, it is a ranking and overall performance that comes in sharp contrast to that of Real Madrid Castilla, the team against which Barcelona B are often measured. Madrid’s reserve team succumbed to defeat at Murcia yesterday, and, much to the delight of the culé world, fell into the Segunda B, also forcing the club’s C team, Real Madrid C, to drop into the fourth division."
