Whose fault is that? (the lecture bit - I can understand a paper sneaking up on you, but never attending a lecture is a no-no in my books).

Just implying that I had a semesters worth of reading to do for that course.

If I can finish the paper tonight, I will be good.

Good luck to ya. I've got a bit of a deadline myself. I have an article due tomorrow before 1. I'm almost done, but I've got to go over it with a fine-toothed-comb and make sure it is perfect.

I figure I'll be done writing by midnight, but I've got to check it for AP style and all that.

After that article, I've got 2 major assignments and 2 minor ones left for the semester to go along with routine course-work and reading.

I have no reason to be nervous because there's four whole weeks left but the major assignments are huge.

One is a research proposal that will probably require 30 hours of diligent work.

The other one is a transcription/analysis of an indepth interview that will probably take 20 hours of work.

Gonna have to try and steal some hours while "at work."

    10% done, lol.

I think my stupid laptop charger is dying on me. If it goes, my life ends.

edit: About 50% done the paper. Will finish the rest in the morning.

My university changed my program's requirements. It's a major piss off, and it might cost me a year.

I have done all the requirements to get accepted except one of them, and I can't take that course because it would cost me an entire year. It's a first year course that I can't take alongside a higher level course that I have to take next year. If I take the first year course, I have to wait an entire year to do the other course, and that pushes everything back one full year because the higher year course is a prereq for two other courses (that are prereqs for two other courses themselves).

I emailed the program advisor. Hopefully, I will not have to take that one course.

Edit: Best Case: I don't have to take first year course.

Situation I can live with: They let me take the first year course later on. It will still cost me money, and an extra semester, but it may end up making my life a lot easier.

Worst Case: I have to take that course now, costing me an entire year.

They cannot change shit after you started your program if it affects you adversely. Also, if they don't back off, you can ask for an independent study.

I hope you're right. It's not even a big deal, me thinks. Anyone at the school who looks at my previous courses would be able to tell that I can take this random course and meet the required grade.

How does your assessment feed into your overall GPA? I just found out a few months ago that all of my modules for first and second year actually count towards 0% of my overall grade, and my third year courses make up 100% That is actually a good thing for me - I spent second year in a mire of drunk and stonedness, barely scraping through most of the classes (and failing THREE!). Since I went back this year I have gotten 67-72% for all of my classes (70% being the mark for a first class honour over here).

Anyway, getting back on topic there is a reason I bring this up. This term I am taking five third year modules (though the standard is four modules, I wanted to free up as much time as possible for my thesis this time next year) and planned to repeart the two second year modules I had failed from this term next year, when doing my thesis. The college had no issues with it whatsoever in January, took the fees, the paperwork, etc and registered me. Then about a month ago they changed their mind and said I had to finish the two second year repeats before doing any third year modules.

Eventually we came to an agreement, anyway (and though a pain in the ass short term, it will be more beneficial to me next year when doing that thesis): I will do the five third year modules this term, then in the summer I will do the repeat exams of the second year classes (although that means I cna only avail of 70% of the overall grade for them - not that it matters much, as those classes don't go towards my final degree), and that means that this time next year I will have my thesis to do, and absolutely nothing else!

So basically, if the class does not count towards your overall final grade/degree (and you should be able to convince them that it shouldn't, as it wasn't on the course when you started), then I would advise you to enquire about taking the repeat exam of it in the summer rather than doing it next year or the year after. That is if they hold firm on you having to do the course. Given that it is a first year module and you are a few years ahead it shouldn't be much difficulty to pass without getting to (m)any of the lectures. E-mail the lecturer asking if he can email the notes and explain the situation if this is how it turns out, and I would be stunned if he wasn't accommodating enough to send them your way, and possibly one or two other useful bits of info, etc. Like I said, bit of a pain in the ass alright but it is FAR better than the alternatives.

If the class does count towards your overall grade, you could try and push to do the repeat exam/assignments and have them graded as if they were 'in term' and no repeats (e.g. at 100%), which you also should have a right to... if they count towards your overall grade.

If that works out, buy a bottle of whiskey or something for the admin that sorted you out. There is probably nobody better to get on the good side of in college, than the admins, which most people don't seem to notice for some reason.

This course wouldn't count towards my grades because I took a the harder version of the course (or will be this summer).

Everyone I have spoken to has said that I am held to the requirements on which i was admitted (like Johno said), so it may end up being a non-issue.

It's interesting that your grades are like that. A lot of the grad programs I enquired about said they only look at your final two years, and will consider any earlier years only if you are in close competition with someone (not true for direct entry into PhD programs).

Dude, he is in America. You can't apply common sense and logic to his bureaucratic problems.

For fcuksake. My buddy has lived in Fla. for 19 of his 22 years on the planet. He went to Georgia for 3 years to do his undergrad where he was naturally an out o state student. He returns to Fla. for grad school where he is, you guessed it, an out of state student. He failed to fill out paperwork to apply for in state residency, the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

Man, I checked the preliminary catalogue for next year, and some of the program requirements are piss easy.

When I entered, I needed an A- in Physics, Chem and Calc II to do a major in Biophysics, now you need an A- in Physics and have to pass Chem and Calc II.

    Sigh.

Same thing happened to me Bronaldo and the professor who teaches the class (freshman class) put me in an individual study and just had me help him set up some of the class like a grad student. Easiest class ever.

So, I email the advisor telling her I have been enrolled in the program, but do not meet the new requirements to be enrolled, and I asked if I was grandfathered to the requirements in place when I was enrolled. This was her response:

    Bronaldo,

The requirements haven't changed for this year. They will be changing as of September.
You will never be kicked out of the program - but if you don't meet all the requirements
you wont' be approved to graduate with the specialist. Have you added the subject post
    already?

    Kathleen

********ing bullshit, no? I shouldn't have to do the new requirements, it will basically cost me an extra year of uni.

    What a ********ing crummy week.

There you go, there's always a way around it if you've got enough ability to think it out and maintain calm. Good to hear. :)
