he had a very intellectual approach to coaching.

the 10 or 20 minutes dhorasoo actually played in the WC he lit it up. he was an excellent piece to have in the toolbox and for all his faults, always was. imagine a ribéry with a 15 minute bettery, but you just flip the switch and it works every time. vikash was... well something like that.

The good thing with his coaching is that France almost never had the lead therefore safeguarding a result was useless. It was probably to prevent this kind of situations.

So basically France only won about 50% of the time under Domenech's tenure, against all sorts of sides, from good to piss poor.

Blanc (the coach that you seem to criticise much more) already has a much, much, better record than that, and against all odds following the total melt-down of 2010.

if i criticize blanc more than domenech there's one reason that would be understandable: he grew up just a rifle shot from my house and he both played and coached at OL. he's a born and bred gone.

but that's not it: it's just to try to balance out the execration of the one and the adoration of the other which are both excessive. when everyone starts slagging off lolo i'll be right there defending him tooth and nail.

well he was wrong... but you can understand his mistake, it took a HORRIBLE match from barcelona not to qualify against a chelsea who were no great shakes themselves.

the goal they gave up at the end of the first half was just inexcusable. they're qualified, all they need to do is hold a score against a team a man down who is absolutely incapable of anything except the long ball counter... even quevilly could have held on last night.

after that they needed to score, but hey, no biggie right? except that for 45 minutes they just stood around the area like 10 guys waiting to catch a bus. well they missed it.

i've never been enthralled by barca, frankly they even bore me when they win. 500 passes per game of which only a dozen show any purpose or imagination. last night it was 800, of which only 4 or 5 were worth a clou. about the same ratio as for people who voted for cheminade.

at least victor valdez was amusing. and there was evidently some kind of charity thing on, two guys were on the pitch who obviously won their place on the blaugrana squad in a church raffle (9 and 23), that makes up for unicef. but i missed the penalty because at half time i got caught up in a documentary about the amish which was pretty interesting... i should have watched that to the end!

Ramires' goal was pretty to watch, even if Barca should have never let it happen. I have no love for that club.

tee hee... the kit isn't even an OL kit: in those days (in fact until recently, and still the case for amateur clubs these days) the FFF handed out the kits for the CdF matches. one club got white and the other could have any color they wanted as long as it was red or blue. btw, if you look close you'll see it's an adidas jersey (FFF sponsor) while the shorts are lcq... and with players' names on them too!

if you check out all the cool pics here there's one of ray wearing the "nantes" jersey after the game.

they have slideshows of our three other cup victories too.

    Domenech: England have no quality

The former France boss has stated that the Three Lions should be an easy first game for Les Bleus at Euro 2012, and that Laurent Blanc's men should get to the semi-finals at least

Former France boss Raymond Domenech has stated that England have no quality and will be an easy Euro 2012 opener for Les Bleus.
The rivals have been drawn against each other in Group D along with Sweden and Ukraine, and will do battle in the first game of the pool on June 11

The 60-year-old, who coached his nation between 2004 and 2010, has stated that Roy Hodgson’s men will not stand in France’s way and that Laurent Blanc’s team should be looking to get to the semi-finals at least.
“The first game against England should be easy as they have no quality,” Domenech is quoted as saying by France Football.
“Then we must not lose against Ukraine and we will progress past the first round.
“I put France among the favourites, I truly believe it.
“Eighteen matches unbeaten, beating England and Germany away from home, also beating Brazil, finishing first in our qualifying group; this makes you a favourite.
“They should get to the semi-finals, at least,” he predicted.
At Euro 2008, Domenech watched on as his side finished bottom of Group C, picking up only one point.

Pretty good analysis on the whole but the part about England is just stupid. I mean i agree they are kinda bad at the moment but to say an euro match will be easy, no matter the opponent, is irresponsible and doesn't put you in the right spirit to win. If all his coaching is about telling the players : "don't worry, they're shit, we'll win easily", then now i understand better why we failed miserably in 2008 and 2010.

But kudos to him for calling France a favorite and putting the win as the objective. Blanc lacks this kind of mentality. It seems like he doesn't even want to win.

he's been using the strategy that was even old in seneca's day: lowering expectations to increase perceived glory.

ray had his problems. but he wasn't a weasel.

I think Blanc sets realistic expectations. He doesnt expect to win the Euro and he shouldn't. When have France ever performed well when they were overconfident?

As a person who watches english football regularly, their squad isn't really all that impressive. But there are no easy matches in the Euros, Ray is smarter than that.

Yeah i know it's never good to set an overconfident mood in the country, but i hope he will expect a lot more from his players than what he's saying to the press. Like when he told them secretly that they could beat Germany. But what if, when (if ?) we reach the quarters, he just tells them : "Now you've done your job so it's ok if you lose ?". That would be a huge waste, and a fault worse than everything Domenech did in my book. But Blanc has been a great champion himself so i can only hope he will know better than that.

There's no chance of that happening. What Blanc says to the media and what he says to the players are not going to be the same. Like you mentioned yourself, the man is a champion. He's played the game at the highest level and is a competitor. We're going to to Ukraine to win, not just fill in spots. I'm certain he knows that.

interviewed by Les Inrockuptibles (france's version of Rolling Stone or NME) hatem ben arfa had some nice things to say about ray despite the fact that he was shunted from the euro 2010 squad:

"his words really touched me, he took the time to talk to me, saying things like 'your passion has to help you on the field, don't turn it against yourself'. I felt a real affection coming from him, he was protecting and sincere. I have the impression we're driven by the same feeling of revolt".
