I got through my oral's but never wrote the dissertation. No jobs available and I had to put a roof over my head and that of my bride. I had a long and successful career in civil service
The weekly Saturday game on the main network is huge. FOX would only do that a few times a year, and rarely live.
With all these history diplomas, I guess we should start a thread titled "Remnants of the civil war and reconstruction in modern American politics"
Or how about "Eastern European Political Systems in Transition"? My history degree has been lost to the dark recesses of my house. No idea where it is. Sadly, I never used it either.
I don't have a history degree, I'm just working my way through the various Yale courses on ITunesU. Apparently seems to be a far more cost effective method for gaining interesting, but monetarily worthless knowledge .
Wow all these degrees being hoisted. Not a chance in hell for working class Brits in my day, young man. Especially when they "ask" me not to come back because I "disrupted" the class, at 15. Moi! History became more interesting as I got older, just finishing up a tome on WWII now. "The Guns at Last Light." Rick Atkinson.
They have a lot to learn though. The guy that wrote this really hasn't been around any of the "other football" talking about the scrum?! Maybe he meant 'Scum', with the Manu quote.
The V.A. paid for mine thanks to an accident I had while on a training mission in the Marines. Otherwise, I never would have even got the degree I did. I enjoy social history and could care less about military stuff.
Oh I'll read all types of history. I just mentioned the book I'm currently reading. Hard to get a full grasp of history without the military 'stuff'. From the Egyptians, Alexander, the Caesars, Normans...etc. The social bit is people trying to make a life in between wars.
I accused LB of being a "Proud Dad" My two daughters both have their Masters. Both first to have degrees in their generation in our family.
Both my daughters have Masters as well. My lad is too busy working right now but who knows. Yes we are loud and proud.
?? Employed in my field in Liverpool and now employed in my field in KC. 25 years as a historian and counting ...
both of my wife's sons have Masters degrees, much good it does them. but the younger is a 'recruiter' for a local law school. who invented that job?
another of my stupid observations. KC is on the Eastern edge of The Great Plains, if my geography stands up. i'm reading Bill Bryson's Made In America, which makes all sorts of remarks about the Western migration of the early settlers, including a comment about Lewis and Clark's journals, which had me thinking about the writing of history in the early part of the 19th Century. knowing that the Expedition (Corps of Discovery) embarked from the Eastern part of what is now Missouri, and passed through what was or is KC, i put 3 and 3 together and got 4... made sense to me.
I enjoy Bill Bryson's writing a lot. I'll have to take a look at that book Stilts, it's one of the few of his I have yet to read. All his travel stuff is fantastic as is his historical work.
Trails are the fun part. We used to live on the Mormon Trail 30 miles or so before it got to the Salt Lake overlook and Brigham Young said enough of this crap, we're stopping here. Used to ride the motor bike finding parts of the trail still in wagon ruts, the odd oxen shoes even parts of a wagon wheel in a stream. Best book I found on the Trails West was, and I have a few : "Men to Match my Mountains." Irving Stone. Reads like a novel. (Social History )
Actually, I did use my history degree for a while when I worked at a living history museum that honored Pennsylvania Dutch culture (Anabaptists such as Mennonites, Dunkards, Amish etc). I did interpretation at the 18th century log farm which made use of my farming skills as well as my historical acumen. This picture is from about 4-5 years ago. I'm a lot better looking now.
you pretty much would have to be... but i'm troooly digging the hose and the hat. stylin' to the max, youngstah!
