A lot of people agree with you. I don't but won't debate about it here. There is a thread in the referee forum.

Again not to be abrassive, and I actually agree that Ali was not at all a bad guy given the context of the age he was in... but what shout the emboldened matter, at all, to somebody who is not American like bigman?

So by that logic, should Americans not give a feck about Nelson Mandela?

First of all, the NOI was an angrily racist organization that was so angrily racist that they held meetings with the KKK because they had so much in common with them (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ot...s-revealed-by-documentary-Boxing-and-MMA.html). Muslims aren't any more racist than any other religion, but the NOI was specifically a racist organization. Ali even spoke at a Klan rally on keeping the races from mixing. The reason Ali had such a viscous hatred for Joe Frazier was because of his perceived need for White approval (which is why he called him an 'Uncle Tom' at every available opportunity). It's understandable where Ali's hatred for Whites comes from, growing up in the American south and all but to act like he's some sort of beacon toward which we should all be looking is ridiculous. I urge you to check out the HBO documentary called "Thrilla in Manilla." This doc really changed my perception of Ali. He is undoubtedly the greatest boxer of all time. But for a large part of his adulthood, Ali was angrily racist and held views most Americans would now find really horrible.

I've never really understood why he is so venerated in American culture. Apart from probably being the greatest boxer of all time, Ali was a pretty terrible person. Super racist, thought races should be kept apart, and especially hated Blacks who didn't tow these lines.
