Alaska G.O.P. Still Backs Re-election for Stevens - N.Y. Times

ANCHORAGE — The Alaska Republican Party on Tuesday found itself in the awkward position of urging voters to return a convicted felon to the United States Senate.

The party is pushing for the re-election of Senator Ted Stevens, who was convicted on Monday of seven felony counts but continues his campaign for a seventh full term, in the hope that his re-election will allow Republicans to hold onto his seat even if Mr. Stevens eventually resigns. Under that chain of events, a special election would be held later to replace Mr. Stevens, giving the party the chance to find a new candidate and keep the seat out of Democratic hands.

“That’s the reality,” said McHugh Pierre, a party spokesman. “Unfortunately, the situation’s the situation.”

LITHONIA, Ga. — Just a few blocks off Max Cleland Boulevard, named for the Democrat defeated by Senator Saxby Chambliss in a bitter Congressional race six years ago, a line has formed that could be problematic for Mr. Chambliss’s own re-election this year.

Hundreds of voters, most of them black residents of bedroom communities east of Atlanta, are waiting to cast early ballots, motivated by the candidacy of Senator Barack Obama but many also taking the opportunity to vote for Jim Martin, Mr. Chambliss’s Democratic opponent...

Like several other Senate and House candidates in North Carolina, Ohio and Connecticut, Mr. Chambliss finds himself in a tight race even though only months ago he was considered a cinch for re-election. A significant part of his problem is the surging participation by African-American voters, their ranks bolstered by the newly registered, a group expected to vote overwhelmingly for Democrats this year.

He seemed like a very nice guy. When he learned that me and my wife were from Chicago, he could have cut it short and moved on to actual Mississippi voters, but he was very cool and talked to us about both Chicago and Mississippi for a while.

I don't know much about him but a good first impression . . . and a great fried pork chop with black eyed peas, cream corn and fried okra.

Senate Candidate Files Lawsuit Over ‘Godless’ Ad - N.Y. Times

The Democratic candidate for Senate in North Carolina fired back in court on Thursday after a television advertisement questioned her Christian faith and linked her to a political group called the Godless Americans. The candidate, State Senator Kay Hagan, filed a defamation lawsuit against her Republican opponent, Senator Elizabeth Dole, and released a 30-second television response affirming her belief in God.

Ms. Dole’s ad, which has been running statewide since Tuesday, accuses Ms. Hagan of secretly attending a fund-raiser hosted by a founder of the Godless Americans, a group that advocates the total separation of church and state.

After video clips of atheists questioning Jesus’s existence and calling for the removal of “In God We Trust” from dollar bills, Ms. Hagan’s face appears on screen as a woman’s voice says, “There is no God.” The voice belongs to a female member of the secularist group, not Ms. Hagan, but the implication seems to be that Ms. Hagan is uttering the words.

Red Mississippi Could Go for Blue in Senate Race - CNN

In a normal election, the possibility of traditionally red Mississippi voting blue is slim. But with an unpopular president, a broken economy and an African-American at the top of the Democratic ticket, the prospect is high for Democrats to pick up in November.

Mississippi has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 26 years and has voted Republican in eight of the last nine presidential elections. In 2000 and 2004, the state overwhelmingly supported George W. Bush by a nearly 60% margin. Despite some polling showing Republican Sen. Roger Wicker with a comfortable lead over former Democratic Gov. Ronnie Musgrove, both campaigns agree the race is going to come down to every last vote...

Stu Rothenberg, of the nonpartisan Rothenberg Political Report -- which tracks House and Senate races -- says a combination of factors is putting Mississippi in play, but the outcome is dependent on who votes. "There is all this concern that the African-American vote will be disproportionate, largely changing the nature of the electorate," Rothenberg said. "Where this race stands is somewhere in between the single digits and even."

Republicans Scrambling to Save Seats in Congress - N.Y. Times

WASHINGTON — Outspent and under siege in a hostile political climate, Congressional Republicans scrambled this weekend to save embattled incumbents in an effort to hold down expected Democratic gains in the House and Senate on Tuesday.

With the election imminent, Senate Republicans threw their remaining resources into protecting endangered lawmakers in Georgia, Minnesota, Mississippi, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Oregon, while House Republicans were forced to put money into what should be secure Republican territory in Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia and Wyoming.

Sensing an extraordinary opportunity to expand their numbers in both the House and Senate, Democrats were spending freely on television advertising across the campaign map. Senate Democrats were active in nine states where Republicans are running for re-election; House Democrats, meanwhile, bought advertising in 63 districts, twice the number of districts where Republicans bought advertisements and helped candidates...

What seems especially striking about this year’s Congressional races is that Democrats appear to have solidified their gains from the 2006 midterm elections and are pushing beyond their traditional urban turf into what once were safe Republican strongholds, creating a struggle for the suburbs.

Are there any Rep senators from states with Dem governors that might accept a cabinet spot? James "Big Douche" Gilmore used this tactic in VA when he was governor, selecting dem. senators from rep-leaning districts for executive branch jobs. The special elections for their replacements all went to the reps.
