I didn't see a thread for it, but its on the official website that we're more than 50-50 going to sign another DP and the rumors are that its Rafa Marquez. My question though, is this really the kind of player we need? Ream and Mendes is a decent CB pairing, and while Rafa is excellent at playing long balls from a defensive midfield position what we really need is a CM/AM who can maintain positive, creative possession and link the back and front lines.

I certainly won't be upset if he comes, but I don't think he fills the position that we need the most.

TBH, I think we need a player to bring the ball out of the defense, similar to what M. Bradley did for the Nats. Yesterday we spent way too much time passing through the back line.

Well, even rumors have sources, where is your link or source of reference? If you dont have a link, then your rumor is not even a rumor, but pure goosip, maybe because a friend of yours said it at the bar out of the blue after 19 beers. So, please clarify it for us.

I really don't mean to embarrass you but if you read my post you'd see that there is mention on the official NY Red Bulls website that confirms these rumors.

Those same Soler quotes were used to support the idea that the 3rd DP will be Freddie Ljungberg. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if it were all a smoke screen.

There is a huge (and growing) Mexican population in and around the NYC area. As much as I despise the Mexican National team, there is something about Marquez coming to NYRB that makes sense on a club level...at least in terms of reaching out to fans. In terms of tactics and needs? Not so sure.

You'd have to have a pretty irrational hatred for the Mexican national team to not want a player at our club.

    Re: Marquez Rumors

No way... and I admit I am being irrational and un-pragmatic about it...

But the fact remains that I despise Marquez as a player...

I would venture to guess that I am not alone...

    Re: Marquez Rumors

To be fair, I could stomach most any other Mexican player coming to RBNY...

But, for me, Marquez is a special case... I don't like the Mexican National Team - yes... but I really don't like him...

You're most likely part of an incredibly minute minority.

    He's Mexican, so what?

He struck Tim Howard in the leg with his studs in the Qualifier at Crew Stadium last February. He also head butted Cobi Jones when Mexico was down two nil in the second round of the 2002 World Cup.

We can go on with the examples, but I think you got the idea.

So, what's the big deal? He's not playing in our national team. He'd be playing in MLS.

And those are pretty isolated incidents, he's not a dirty player at all.

    Re: Marquez Rumors

In both cases your players were fine and the rash challenges helped the USA's cause. You'll find his club career has been free and clear of that kind of action.

Blanco got in fights with US players. Luis Hernandez punched Sanneh and Sanchez tried to kick Johnson. Its really more that they lose their heads playing for their country, not sure why. But Marquez's talents as a footballer make up for some hot head incident in 2002 or some hard challenge on a 50-50 in 2009.

    Re: Marquez Rumors

He is a dirty player. Facts have been stated above.

Let me say I have always hated this guy. He would have never been my pick for the 3rd DP but I can see why this would be a very good move for the club(his talent/age/attendance/jersey sales).

It will take some time but I can come around to supporting this guy cause at the end of the day he is playing for my team.

He's a d-bag. That is the real issue... purposefully trying to injure opposing players...

Nigel De Jong is equally a d-bag for the same reasons... and he's obviously not Mexican.

    Re: Marquez Rumors

I'm with most people on the seperation of club/country when it comes to players, but there are always some that cross the divide, or shouldn't as the case may be. From the Mixican NT, for my brother, Blanco is public enemy number one. For me it's Marquez, with Blanco maybe 1b. Has nothing to do with them being Mexican either.

Even though its club/country again, emotionally it's not unlike when Metro got Mamadou Diallo. Never should have happened and I could never root for him in a Metro shirt. And no, it's not particuallry rational as both examples are obvioulsy huge talents, but there's much about fandom that's not very rational.
