Its quite possible. Just very, very rare for someone who is a competitive athlete.

Hes got to have a pretty lean frame, would be suprised if his bone structure isn't also pretty narrow. If thats his current size I wouldnt use a first rounder on him, he may naturally gain weight/strength, but its not a garuntee. And I would be SHOCKED if he has enough strength for the pro game if thats his current weight.

Regardless of his current weight, if that was ever accurate I would also looking into things like Marfan's syndrome in his case, as that could potentionally cut his career short.

As a tall (not quite that) skinny guy when I was that age I wouldnt right him off, but I would be very cautious approaching him if I were a team. Do a thorough physical, collect as much family history info as possible, that sort of thing.

Depends on if you have the physique of a football player or a music geek. ;)

The first thing that comes to my mind, is how do you go through 4 years of college without the strength and conditioning staff at the University correcting the problem....seriously, do they even have a strength and conditioning coach? If they do, why isn't he or she fired already?

NBA teams did anything and everything they could to bulk up Sean Bradley and they couldnt. Some people just dont bulk up easily.

Easy or not, over a couple of years it's doable. It's even doable in the context of a very sport specific training program. Even if he's milk allergic or has another issue to throw up challenges, it's doable. I think the failure of the Quakes' and Dynamo strength and conditioning coaches to fix this problem with Ryan Cochran brought a premature end to his career.

I think its a mistake to think its doable in every case. The extents they went to with Bradley were extreme. Was Cochrane a failure of Ryan Cochrane? A failure of the coaching staff? Or just a failure of biology? In the end does it even matter? Just because you want a player to gain weight/strength, dont assume that what you want will translate into what youll get.

Yeah, it's doable and in every case. What they did with Bradley might have been extreme without being smart or based in science. (Don't know the case you refer to because I couldn't possibly care less about the NBA). But even if there's an underlying medical reason to be found (celiac, hyperthyroid, adrenal fatigue), it's findable. If it takes a little longer, then it does, but it's doable-- 100% for athletes at this level.

It's true though the athlete would have to comply with the recommendations or it wouldn't work--that's sort of obvious.

Based on images of Schoenle on the web, looks like the 150 lb is accurate. His pants look like they're about to fall down here, and I think that wrap on his arm adds another 20% to his weight. I'm afraid that Bernardez would accidentally step on him and we wouldn't be able to find him.

Cochrane in his rookie year looks like a bodybuilding champ next to this guy. Cochrane was a strange case. He was pretty thin for most of his career, then all of a sudden he looks chubby and has a beard - looked like a different person. Male menopause :--)? Unfortunately, in his case, he might have become more stout, but it just also made him go from slow to glacial.

In any case, regarding Schoenle, we've got "doctors" in the Bay Area that can fix him up.

haha, nah man, at 6'2, 150 pounds is like......emaciated. thats terrible. if we take him we seriously gotta get him on a hell of a program to bulk up.......a lot. at 6'2 we should be looking to put on at least another 10, likely 20-25 pounds for him to get the size he needs to not be bumped off the ball in this league. Needs to hit the weights in a big way

edit: i just looked at his legs in the picture  thats just.......wow. My arms are probably wider than his thighs, and im not exactly a muscular guy by any means. they look like gazelle's legs......at the lower point.

If thats the product out there.....im not sure i want to draft him as my defender honestly. thats a project. Id take Muller or Gagnes before him. But where we are drafting we may have no choice.

    latest mock is up:

    http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/01/12/updated-mlssoccercom-mock-draft-after-combine-day-1

they raised and dropped some players wayyy too much based on combine performance. muller and schoenle had better seasons than dylan-tucker gagne of UW. emery welshman should be higher too.

nick deleon had a poor combine last year remember.

one good point they make is Houston just lost Hainualt to ross county, so CB is now a need for them. Could definitely see them taking muller or schoenle above us.

not Johnson- the gameday commentary by SBI had him either making horrible first touches or looking lost and failing to link up with his MF. he could cross the ball well enough at times, but we dont need ryan johnson 2.0.

we might look for another AM to develop behind Baca instead of a CB prospect, if we're able to bring in another Honduran to partner w/ Vic. take the best of the rest w/ 2nd round picks.

Yeah the Deleon combine thing is what sells it as mostly a sham for me. As far as top respects go people will know Johnson has a bad touch just on the tape. Don't need a clone for that

I'm torn between d and CAM depth right now unless someone phenomenal falls then bpa it

Then let's hope that one of our Western division rivals picks up JJ Johnson :D

As for me, if Dillon Powers falls to number 15 it would be criminal not to give him a look.

It wasnt Deleon's performance that cost him, it was the lack of professionalism he showed, showing up out of shape and disinterested.

The value of the combine is two fold for player evaluation. Staffs have a chance to meet players in person, and you have achance to see them in a different environment that may show you something, good or bad, that was hidden by the system they played in. Its a supplement, not a cure all for scouting.

And we dont play with a CAM, we play with a holding mid, and another guy who is somewhere between a holding mid and a defensive mid. Its critical we have a player who can cover a lot of ground and defend. Quick and accurate distribution is more important then flair and creativity.

Powers would be a great #8 CM but I doubt he falls to us.

The stuff that gets me is analysis like this:

Muller's performance in the NCAA final where he completely shut down Eriq Zavaleta is far more meaningful than this little random scrimmage.

Eric Hurtado 2nd on the speed test... I saw him score a sick goal against UCLA a couple years ago. Projects as a good winger in MLS. We just don't really need a winger right now, especially if Dawkins comes back. Also most mocks have Hurtado being off the board by the time we draft.

We need a cd and a cm, but yeah he looks like an interesting guy to pick up in the draft, but one we likely wont have around when we pick so its moot.
