Have a friend who goes to Columbia. Most of her life consists of studying in her room or working in the hospital. Wife talked to her earlier: Wife: Big storm coming. Go get supplies. Friend: I'll go get stuff later. Wife: The Subway is going to be closed later. Friend: Really. I had no idea. Wife: The news says power might be out 5 ot 7 days. Friend: Oh. That sounds bad. Wife: You should pay attention to the news. Friend: Shit.
Even I knew the subway was closing down at 7. People around here were befuddled that they should probably move their cars into a garage and off the street.
I must confess that way out here in California I feel rather removed from the DeathStorm 2012 excitement.
I'll get back to you after the storm. Seriously, we're impressed with a lot of things. It's more walkable than I expected. Groceries are cheaper here than our previous place. There are two coffeshops as good as any I've been to in major cities, and more good restaurants than I expected (couldn't get good falafel in Pittsburgh for the last ten years, and we have a good Thai restaurant and a better one). The city will be facing some serious problems for quite awhile, though, and there are some serious drug problems in a lot of neighborhods that sometimes spill into other neighborhoods. But all in all, not bad. We had a chance to move either to here or to Austin, TX. Now, on one level, we ********ed up. But in terms of our finances, we made the right call, and we don't feel deprived by living here. I seriously miss going into Pittsburgh (Symphony, opera, touring Broadway shows, museums, coffeehouses, etc.) but Philadelphia and NYC aren't that far away, and now that we sold that albatross of a house, we might get to check them out. Once the electricity comes back on.
WNBC in NY's latest scare-the-shit-out-of-you newscast intro. had music that you only hear in action-adventure movies. Enough already, we know it's going to be rainy & windy
Could be worse.. They aren't making you sleep in your car for basically nothing like they did for people in Hawaii last night... My parents had the "pleasure" of doing that after the Japanese earthquake
I agree, leave it to the media to scare the shit out of people. This thing is more overhyped then England at every World Cup.
This evening's forecast: High winds gusting to 60 mph, dangerous waves from 16 - 22 feet. That is for Chicago, friends. And it's already pretty damned windy. I'm thinking this Sandy storm is for real.
Recently a local sports radio guy got fired here in Columbus for saying he wished Desmond Howard would die or get fired so he could watch Gameday again. I agree with both of you, and add Al Roker as well.
I can only imagine the differences between Austin and Scranton. I'm surprised there aren't the touring Broadway shows, we have them all the time here in Binghamton. The nice thing about Scranton is that you're only 2 hours from NYC and Philly so day trips should be nice and easy. A friend lived in Wilkes-Barre for a few years and loved it down there.
I think DC usually tries to err on the side of caution. Especially when they got screwed over on Snowmageddon. In any case, Metro shut down. And when the Metro shuts down, DC shuts down. And my marathon time was 4:02:14. No Paul Ryan fudge time either.
