I still have the plywood for the back window with "Cum on Irene" spraypainted on it. I'll just change the name, clean the gutters, drink some beers and watch the patio furniture float by.
After last years massive flood here, everyone and anyone is already getting prepared for another flood. All my kids care about is Halloween.
It is definitely due to earthquake risk. Underground power lines are safe from the weather, but not from earthquakes, and would take much much longer to fix than overhead lines if an earthquake knocked them out. So we live with a few days of power outage due to storms every winter, rather than having a few weeks or months of power outage when there is a major earthquake. Pretty typical for the Bay Area -- we don't have as many redwoods down here on the Peninsula (at least not where people live), but some jackass a few decades ago decided that eucalyptus trees were nice, so they're all over the place, and they shed branches like nobody's business when the storms come.
Is he Jersey? I thought PSE&G were Jersey. Con Ed is the City and LIPA for Long Island. My wife's uncle works for LIPA, he's on call for tomorrow.
JOrge DobleU Arbusto? (ie Bring it on?!?! i am translating what you wrote..) We are tough peeps up here ...like all Americans are.... but that storm and what it can do...man it is quite something, especially how densely populated the areas it will hit (which are many!) are... Hope everyone is careful and stays safe.... unless u r a daredevil surfer, in which case "good luck" (i doubt i could convince you not to ride them waves)
some of it is visual, sure... but the science behind it how it could basically hover over the area for days.....now THAT s scary flood-wise, safety wise, etc...
Our rainfall predictions are down to 3" between today and Wednesday. However, the wind gusts are now up to 66 mph. Given that there are a lot of trees on my street and alley, not all of them at peak health but nearly all of them with power lines running under or through them, I'm anticipating being without power for awhile.
I was at my friendly neoghborhood hardware store earlier this afternoon picking up non-Sandy related items (weather stripping, WD 40, and duct tape). The owner was telling me that the city and county have been calling around to stores to get people to quit buying sandbags and get to the grocery stores to buy non-perishables. Of course, it's understandable because Irene did some serious flooding on the Susquahanna and the Lackawanna rivers around here. Neither of those are expected to flood this time. About the worst flooding is likely to be at street corners where leaves clog the drains.
So far the worst rain looks like on the Maryland Eastern shore. A north-south squall line has parked there all afternoon. Now it is extended up to the Reading PA area. Delaware has gotten little rain.
Sounds like you're not too far from me. Our local authorities are prepping us for power outages more than anything. They're saying only 2-4 inches of rain here, but winds in higher elevation (where I live) could reach 80mph.
The grocery store was barren of bottled water and junk food. I have some food I can eat without cooking it, but not a lot. Not much room for stuff as I live in a dorm.
