This week the Bayern and Germany captain Philipp Lahm shared some well-thought out opinions on the current political situation in the Ukraine. Compare that to the uncouth yob Terry, who probably couldn't even locate the country on a kiddies' atlas - even though he'll be travelling there this summer.

The difference between German and English football, in a nutshell.

It's a pity Terry isn't playing on the 19th. He was absolutely magnificent against Liverpool.

Oh yeah, what a "proper chance" would be is a proper run of matches to show their capabilities in the NT. The kind that the now-established Bayern players got in the past. It doesn't have to be as many as Schweinsteiger got out of necessity, but as many as Boateng or Badstuber got. Besides, competition should make them all better, no?

A proper chance is not the naming of the players to the squad to give them a few run-outs in the latter stages of matches after the incumbents have taken care of business.

Your lack of a clue about football is laughable. Why did man utd suck in europe for years while they were winning the premiership over and over again in the 90s?

Established players are always going to be first choice. Poldi is a perfect example. With a tournament less than a month away, does Lowe really have time to 'have tryouts'? This isn't varsity. Your players will get their chance in due time.

I know...never asked for anything in the startelf to be changed this close to the tournament. But it had better be right after it...or Löw would not have learnt anything from this.

^^He's no troll. There's others, but he's not.

Let's just hope nobody goes down like Ballack did before the WC. Sure the team benefitted, but I'd say that THAT is the exception not the rule.

This is a legitimate question that BVB-haters are afraid to answer.

All English teams struggled in Europe in the 90s because English football was a joke. The premier league was a joke.....It was the retirement home for has beens, and the only place where technically limited English players could play football......The EPL didnt become the league its today till the late 90s....... Long balls and headers didnt/dont win teams trophies.......

You can keep giving us excuse after excuse about why BVB didnt do well in the C.L or the E.L....But the truth is you failed and failed miserably.....You cant in all honesty tell me that Marseille and Olympiacos have better teams or are more equipped to out preform you in the C.L....

Your group wasnt easy.......but it was very doable.....and you finished last with 1 win out of 6.....If you dont consider this a fail, then you have very low expectations of your team.

Something further complicated by the fact that half of the England cricket team are South African.

In addition to that no other English team was doing well in Europe so we can say the quality of the EPL at that time was lower than the competition in Europe.

Not so for Bundesliga cos currently a BL team is one of the top 3-4teams in Europe and has played in 2 of the last 3 CL finals. Other BL teams like Schalke played the CL semi. (In the last 3 season at worst a BL team plays the Semi)

True, but there's also something to be said for a team's style of play being suited to do well against league sides and not so well against sides from other leagues. BVB has a successful niche in the league, but has not yet found the breadth to deal with Europe. It's still a specialized predator.

For starters, the competition for spots in the past, is not comparable to the situation now.
Boateng plays RB for Germany, a spot which has been up for grabs for quite some time. Badstuber was dropped as LB immediately after his shambolic performance in the Euros, but has always come good as a CB. The German NT defense, though solid, is still considered the weak link in their play. The number of players tried out for the fullback position opposite Lahm is ridiculous. Compare that against the embarrassment of riches in midfield, esp attacking midfield, and you see why Grosskreutz didn't get a shot for the LW spot. Schurrle has been impressive, Podolski has shown that he can always be depended upon, and the latest alternative being Gotze, there is no need for Loew to call him up with the tournament so close by.

Grosskreutz, loudmouth that he is, has been impressive in the second half of the season. The fact that he was part of Loew's plans earlier indicates that he might play a part in the build up to WC2014. All this provided he maintains good form, and steps up a notch. Adding to the present crop, there is a lot of talent coming up in attacking midfield through the Bundesliga and the youth teams, lets see if he can keep up. But then, competition should make them all better, no? :D

Grossfotze....I'd rather do without. we have enough options...and IMHO...there ARE similar options..

He's one of the ones that I'm not colorblind on...Goetze..he's gold

I should probably clarify my statement.

Yes, BVB sucked in the CL. Everyone knows that. BVB knows that. BVB fans know that. Squid knows that.

But when BAYERN fans downplay BVB's back-to-back Bundesliga championships by saying "oh yeah? well you suck in the Champions League," it sounds pretty pathetic. One has nothing to do with the other. These Bayern fans are "haters."

Well it makes us feel better about this...and (HOPEFULLY) winning the CL will totally negate it for us. We'll always have "well we won the CL 4 times, have 21 titles and the majority of the NT start elf"

But yea...they owned us 4 times in a row.
