I read someplace that when it was built part of the deal was something like $750,000 for special construction in the corners which amounted to retractable seats so that a regulation FIFA pitch would fit. I'm sure it was par tof the usual "see, this isn't just for football, it's really a multi use building for lots of stuff" bullshit they always toss out there when they're trying to get the public to pay for a stadium so that they can take it over, make a bunch of money and refuse to let other events in because it might "damage" the field. So theoretically the place has a ready to go soccer configuration, complete with locker room.
The Calgary Flames were the Atlanta Flames from 1972 to 1980. "Their nickname is a reference to General Sherman's march to the sea during the Civil War, in which the city was nearly burned to the ground." So, we really ARE the Worst People for casually making reference to something that an official team of the city legally named their team, originally.
It's just another example of some people being able to use the f-word and some people not being able to use it...
This talk of cats and Keith Olbermann ties well into the best thing Olbermann ever did (or what he inspired): https://screen.yahoo.com/countdown-keith-olbermann-000000660.html I would video-ize the link if I remembered how to do so.
I've heard that song 100 times and I still laugh. He was a scrawny calf who looked kind of woozy No one suspected he was packing an Uzi
Orlando and New York will have temporary homes until they can build a stadium so that doesn't bother me too much. When you're asking for the expansion fees MLS is right now you can't expect them to get the stadiums built before the start play every time. Atlanta's will be similar to Seattle where it will be built with other sports in mind. If they do it right like Seattle does with sectioning off the soccer crowd and making it feel like it belongs then that will be fine too. Who is the other one, Miami? Do they have a plan yet? I'm much more worried about teams like DC and New England getting out of the bad situations they're in than I am new teams having purpose built stadiums when they enter the league.
There is nothing "fine" about playing soccer on that piece of shit plastic pitch in Seattle. It is a disgrace.
Didn't DC announce plans to build a new stadium? I don't think I've heard anything since then - wonder if it's still in the works.
I think the way they have the fans in the lower section and cover the top makes it work for the crowd, I'm not pro artificial turf. Unfortunately having a soccer specific stadium doesn't automatically mean they'll have natural grass as they should (see: Portland or Toronto for their first four years). BC Place was also designed for both football and soccer and has much better turf than Seattle so I guess they would be a better example of how it can be done well. I'm "fine" with a stadium being multi use, not necessarily ok with the surface they would use.
The big problem is that Garber made a big old stink about new teams NEEDING to have a SSS to get an expansion. And if NYCFC plans on spending 3 full years coexisting with the Yankees... that's gonna be a mess, sorta like it was when DCU shared RFK.
