C'mon, it was a little funny. For the record, I wasn't writing him off. I was suggesting he might not stick here unless he said "My strengths are English, dogged man-marking, sit-ups after practice, furious ball chasing, more man-marking, towing the team bus with a rope clenched between my teeth, defense, extra sit-ups and of course my low salary."
I have realistic expectations about what this current ownership will ever spend, and will be surprised if/when they ever do. You expect the owners to spend the money necessary to make the Quakes a top side, and are always disappointed. Guess I like to live my life in the light.
Faded, you're really going to hate me because I just found out we released WalMart to make way for the return of last night's vindaloo Khari Stephenson. I'm really getting paranoid this club is reading my posts and kicking the ballsac.
Typical Earthquake winger, and probably a decent one. He won't be asked to play much defense, which is probably a good thing from what I've seen so far. The parallels with Chavez (when he was good) and Dawkins are pretty obvious. There's two kinds of "holding the ball in tight spaces", one is when you are in motion attacking the D and one is when you're just trying not to give up a counter in midfield. I'm guessing he's good at the first and bad at the second, as were Dawkins and Chavez.
I don't think this ownership will overspend on a Bradley, Defoe or Dempsey simply for the star effect. I do think they will be in a position to spend more money on DP quality players ($500k to $1+ million) with the additional stadium revenue. And hopefully they are also willing to go big in player development.
My dad is Portuguese and an old school Benfica fan. I talked to him this weekend and he surprisingly asked me if Yannick was playing for the Earthquakes yet. He doesn't really follow MLS so it was kind of cool to hear him ask, maybe it will bring some people out to see the Quakes. Btw, it's pronounced "Yah-neek (D)Jah-loh" for anyone still wondering. You basically hold the d/j sound slightly before saying the rest. Side note - my dad also served in the Portuguese military in 60s/70s in Yannick's home country, Guinea-Bissau.
Assume he will have Visa, fitness and injury problems that will keep him out until May and you'll have everything covered... If he shows up sooner, you get a pleasant surprise.
http://www.quakerattleandgoal.com has a "breaking news" item that Djalo has his "paperwork" and will be available to play on Saturday against the Revs (assuming he doesn't get injured before then - knock on wood).
finally some news....seems front office has had very little to say (vague) about him since he signed. I'm hoping other teams continue to assume Quakes are going have the wingers take the ball down the side to cross it in....but now he and Shea cut inside and actually take a shot on goal once in a while....
Jordan Stewart presents...Djalo and TomTom juggling tricks! Could be part of the half-time show. Wonder if Djalo will come on the field to his theme song: "Mallow Djalo"
Was going threw some Yannick highlights and found this gem. Although it has little to do with him, I think he may be used to the "Never Say Die" mentality. Go to 2:35.
"Warriors have fan in new Earthquakes star from Portugal" (San Jose Mercury News - Wednesday, 3/26/14) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Anyone else hear about the new promotion with sponsor Kraft Foods? If Djalo scores a hat trick, free boxes of 1-2-3 "Djalo" for everyone at the match!
