My guess would be that Barklage's salary this year will be close to $100k and Beita's will be close to $200k. If so, I have to wonder if it is worth it to make this move in order to save $100k, especially since they squander that amount so easily in things like Hernandez's salary (~100k too much), Ballouchy's salary last year (~100k too much), etc.
Morrow was in an option year, for a veteran that is at least a 15-20% raise per year so he would have been over $150k in 2014 and $175k in 2015. Last year we found better players for the positions he could play so he became depth, and $150k is too much money to pay for depth in defense. Your kind of thinking is how we got into Alan Gordon at ~$200k but at least he is a "super-sub" with the ability to make an impact late in a game.
Barklage was taken in the second round of the re-entry draft and could be secured with a "bona fide" offer defined as a 5% increase over his last contract year. So he should be under $80k in 2014. And we probably received decent allocation money for Beita as well so the net swing to the positive is probably on the order of $200k+.
Right, Al Ocation, he's gotta be an awesome player, since we have acquired him several times this off-season.
Whatever. Still soured on this deal. Hope Gorlitz makes the team, lights it up, and helps us forget all about losing our homeboy. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/steven-beitashour-confident-iran-watching-210300412--mls.html
Like Khari & Shea, I have a feeling Beita will be back someday. I guess the Caps were the only ones willing to give him what he wanted.
business shouldnt be bridges burned. ever. That would be extremely unbecoming of our organization if we were that immature of a player trying to negotiate salary. But it wouldnt surprise me
A Persian friend of mine today was sounding like this Beita move to a Canadian team was politically motivated. Not sure how true it is or not but its interesting how different groups see things differently.
I could see this as well, but not coming from Steve...coming from Team Melli, in the vein of "If you want a chance at the making the team, you can't be playing in the US."
Vancouver's cost of living is probably cheaper than San Jose's so his Canadian dollar will probably take him a lot farther.
Yeah but he will probably be making $200k there and he was only making $47k here. I'm sure you can still by a decent home in Vancouver for $350k whereas in San Jose, a crappy house costs $600k so he is still better off. I'm sure rents are cheaper than Silicon Valley are also.
He was making $47k because he refused to sign a "fair" contract like Morrow did (who was making $130k). Not that it helped Morrow ... No you can't really buy a "decent" house for $350k in Vancouver. That's about the price of a 1 bedroom condo in a good location in town. Rents are a bit more reasonable.
From what I heard, he is making more than that fair amount up there. As for cost of housing, you can't even buy a garage for that price here. The reason I know is because I've been looking for the last 7 years when I sold my 3 bedroom 2 bath 1400 sq ft house in Campbell for $780k.
