The ESPYs are to sports what the rock and roll hall of fame is to music -- i.e. totally irrelevant...
They select midfielders -- not wingers, ACMs and DCMs, so for this purpose they might as well play the same position...
If Beckham skips the Allstar game to go to the Oympics, I was hoping that Chavez would be named as his replacement as the team could use his speed and crossing ability against Chelsea. But with Morrow being named, I just can't see Olsen picking another Quake, so I would guess that someone like Kamara or Lee Nguyen might get picked instead. But hopefully he gets honored when they name the "Allstar 32 man roster" that gets named after the game (they add as many guys as required to the ones already named for the game to total 32, with the additional players resulting from player voting).
Not really - for the first XI, they just pick the top 4 midfielders by vote. But when Olsen adds players, he needs to name players who can round out a team he can field, which really required getting 2 defensive minded midfielders (or else the team would get overrun by Chelsea). Beckerman and Alonso were both pretty deserving, if you want to argue for Chavez over someone Olsen named it would be over Pontius or maybe Eddie Johnson. But both of those two have had very good years, so it's hard to argue. With only 18 players getting named from the entire league, the Quakes did amazingly well to get 3 players named in the 18, and then to get Morrow added. I remember the 2005 Quakes that were so good, and yet not a single player made the Allstar game because there were so many very good players that none of them stood out. Brad Davis ended up getting named to replace someone, but he was the only player named.
I thought I read because Beckham was not picked to play for team GB, he didn't even want to go to the Olympics at all?
What? Olympics sholympics. You mean Posh would not be chomping at the bit to ply her high fashion wares at the grand spectacle that is the MLS all-star game? You know, with top-o-the-top-o A-listers like Garbs and Lands and Lie's?
No - the articles have said that maybe he would just go for a week or so, and not stay as long as people were expecting him to because he said he didn't want to miss too many Galaxy games. Even though his contract supposedly said he would be at the Olympic games for the entire time (when he signed this offseason everyone thought he'd be playing, though), he's not planning on spending the entire 2+ weeks in England. But nowhere has anyone said or quoted him that he didn't want to go at all. If MLS puts pressure on him, he might play in the ASG and then fly immediately to London, that would get him there in time for England's opening soccer game on Thursday and also for Opening Cermonies on Friday.
