Not sure we can do that if he is signed beyond this year. The contract we have with him he signed with Colorado (or with the league while with Colorado) and I don't know when it expires or if it might be fully guaranteed. Plus, we likely have to cut salary just to get under the cap/budget.
The guy's been injured all year. No one expected him to be out this long. It's not like he has 20 or 25 starts. In hindsight, he probably should have gone on the IR, but even then, the team would have had trouble filling that roster spot after First Kick. Even before the match fixing scandal, it was widely reported that DCU had the discovery claim on him.
IR wouldn't have done anything for us since we didn't need the roster spot anyway. You get the spot back not the money when you place a guy on IR. Money is where we are tight.
Well, not really not if you have 20 senior (on budget guys) and one goes down in an important position. The only way to fill it without the IR designation would be with an off-budget player (minimum salary guy). This at least gives you the option of signing a real player if you have the budget.
Bengston seems to have trouble getting along with coaches. And I bet Ralston still has NE organization connections that would tell him the real story
How about Eddie Johnson?? They already have 3 DP's and players who's salary will merit an increase so simply they can't afford him for next season I wouldn't think. Wouldn't it be tempting at the least?
Something about EJ rubs me the wrong way, could be because he is a douche. Dude will want a lot of money for doing very little.
Cancelling season tickets if we get EJ. He is motivated now for new contract and WC spot - after WC 2014 he will be either a malcontent or severely overpaid
I don't know if I'd cancel my tickets but I agree with your assessment of EJ. More potential problems than he's worth.
Omar Salgado is still my dream pick. Depending on what happens in Frisco, we might be able to grab some kids from the dumpster fire there. Ditto with Montreal or Vancouver.
I've had this same thought about this same player. I saw VCW overload with attacking talent and thought we might be able to nab him. Last year. However, I now suspect that there is a reason that he has disappeared. I can't assume that Martin Rennie is THAT incompetent. What is your read? What makes you think he is not just another high-draft pick wash out?
LOL...you guys are amazing at projecting Omar Salgado from the very, very little he has shown in MLS.
@DonJuego : he was injured and missed some time. He has a lot of tools and yes, Martin could be that incompetent. Both Montreal and Vancouver haven't exactly been rotating their squads unless someones been out. They've been overreliant on certain players, which has caused (maybe) a bit of burnout. Both are sitting on some fantastic talent.
You may be right -- but I suspect there is something wrong with Salgado. I"m not overly impressed with Rennie. Regarding whether he has been rotating his players, the following have all been getting minutes: Miller, Sanvezzo, Mattocks, Manneh. Manneh is younger and newer to the squad than Salgado and practiced his way above Salgado on the depth chart. If you could get his for nothing he might be worth a flyer -- but I generally eschew such speculation.
