Consistency might be questionable this season, but Hernandez was great on Saturday vs RSL, even before the Quakes didn't have to play defense anymore because of Beckerman's antics. A vital contributor to the clean sheet. Can't say he played bad the week before either with a clean sheet for the team on the road vs Dallas, finishing the game down a man for the last 10 minutes. I don't remember his performance versus Dallas being particularly memorable, but he was key in several moments against RSL.
I think his poor showing against Los Angeles has helped him focus on a few things. The guy has a history of coming up big, and when he's on he's very good. But he's only as good as the guys around him are. Having Bernardez continue to build the chemistry back there is doing all kinds of wonders for all of the defenders. In the game against RSL, I noticed not only Hernandez defending well, but Beitashour also seemed to be better in his positioning and anticipating. Morrow was also very good. I definitely prefer Hernandez to Opara if forced to choose despite his age (at least for this season). The staff is going to have to re-evaluate a number of players in the off-season, but yeah, I'm comfortable with him on the back line.
It's almost unfortunate for him that he has made such fantastic saves because it makes his blunders stand out that much more. But overall, he's an above average defender and his work rate has never been a question. That's probably one of the reasons Frank has been so high on him for so long. You don't stay on the same team for as long as he has if you cause problems.

"Earthquakes' Jason Hernandez steps up when needed" (San Jose Mercury News - Tuesday, 10/8/13) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Im proud of him, hes played extremely well the past few appearances for all the stick we give him. He has all a sudden been mr. clutch......i hope he comes to play today.
So is Shea Salinas, although unlike Ramiro and Jason, Shea hadn't been with the team every year since 2008. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Yeah Shea left and came back. I wonder if its because he missed an easy tap in from 2 yards out in the opener against Chicago?
Sadly, each time I see him play, I'm reminded of that one play and it leaves me perplexed and bewildered....I think that miss was a foreshadow of his carefree so far. Think he needs to go back to Salas!
Any word anywhere on his injury? Is it not as bad as it looked in the game? Edit: Merc reports it as thigh strain... http://www.mercurynews.com/earthqua...ddled-injuries-heading-into-toluca-fc-rematch These can take forever to come back from, hope it's not too bad but good to hear he didn't tear knee ligaments.
Whether he comes back or not, I think we have a lot of depth on defense. Scoring goals and our midfield is a another problem though...
Time to rethink about reinserting Jason Hernandez as the defense clearly isn't getting the job done. Could he do any worse than those guys did yesterday in that 12-15 minute span when 3 goals were scored? At this point I think we are all desperate for a change...
man just think of how that back line is gonna look come WC time. No Goodson or Bernardez likely. Im sincerely scared from a USMNT perspective that Goodson and Omar Gonzalez are two of our better defenders.
I hope not, though no one can say the fear isnt well founded. I want our boys to give a good account of themselves. Omar Gonzalez is going to be the weak link, he is going to have to play with a composure that we are simply not used to.
The Midfield was overrun, Jason could not prevent that at center back; however, we will need him healthy soon with World Cup absences looming.
Falvo falvo falvo .. Why did Big Vic have to defend Usain Bolt 1v1 on more than one occasion? Isn't this mismatch on MW and/or JD?
