Gulf Cup 18: Iraq stun Qatar Defending champions Qatar crashed to a 1-0 defeat against Iraq while Saudi Arabia edged Bahrain 2-1 in Group B on the second day of the Gulf Cup here on Thursday, Hawar Mulla Mohamed’s 39th minute goal proved to be the difference in the toughly contested Iraq-Qatar encounter. Hawar found his way past the Qatari defence almost single-handedly before unleashing a left-footed shot, The Qataris had several opportunities to level but Iraqi goalkeeper Noor Sabri Abbas proved to be a formidable obstacle. And had it not been for Qatari goalkeeper Mohamed Sakr’s diving save in the 72nd minute, Jamaluddin Musovic’s team would have been consigned to a bigger defeat. www.the-afc.com

Hi Mussav, I think your thread is very interesting. We are busy for sometime to cover the Iraqi league. The problem is mostly the lack of fixture-dates and not knowing if matches get cancelled etcetera. But by FIFA ranking the team should be on our soccerway portal. If you ever want to help us, check my email etcetera. We can use somebody to cover the Arab leagues. Hans
Gulf Cup 18: Saudi and Iraq held Saudi Arabia and Iraq put themselves within touching distance of semifinal berths in the Gulf Cup with identical 1-1 draws against defending champions Qatar and Bahrain on Sunday. The Saudis had Malik Moad to thank for his 71st minute equaliser after Ali Nasser had put Qatar into an early 10th minute lead. Abdulla Al Marzooqi fired Bahrain, playing their first game under interim coach Marjan Eid after German Hans-Peter Briegel’s mid-tournament sacking, into the lead in the eighth minute, heading in off a corner from Bilal Yousuf. But Iraq struck through prolific striker Hawar Mulla Mohammed three minutes later to equalise. Saudi and Iraq are now on four points in Group B and a draw between them on Wednesday will propel both teams into the last four. Qatar face off against Bahrain in their last game. www.the-afc.com

Our Journey Ends here. Gulf Cup 18: Saudi, Bahrain through to last four Saudi Arabia and Bahrain qualified for the semifinals of the Gulf Cup after defeating Iraq 1-0 and defending champions Qatar 2-1 respectively. Bahrain’s win edged Iraq into second place in Group B on goal difference and they play Group A leaders Oman in Saturday’s semifinals while Saudi Arabia face hosts UAE. Saudi Arabia established the lead with a 12th minute penalty from Yasser Al Qahtani and Iraq squandered several chances to equalise. Their chances were further reduced when Haider Aboudi saw red for a bad tackle on Al Qahtani in the 41st minute. It was Ala’a Hubail who scored twice as Bahrain fought back from a goal down. Hubail restored parity just before the break and a header in injury time put the team in the last four. Qatar were required to beat Bahrain by a two-goal margin and also hope that Saudi Arabia would beat Iraq, to stand a chance of going through to the second round. www.the-afc.com
Hi guys. I run a blog (www.cultureofsoccer.com) and I'm interested in writing a piece about the state of soccer in Iraq. I'm curious what insights you all might have. I've found some sites with basic information on fixtures, results, etc., but very little on how the current situation what the violence and all is affecting the soccer league. Here are the type of questions I'm interested in: My main question is what is the state of soccer in Iraq today? I know that there is a professional league, but is it able to funiton with the situation the way it is today? Do games often have to be moved or the dates changed? From my understanding earlier in this thread, that seems to be the case. Is soccer seen as a dangerous endeavor in general? Are people who are behind the violence opposed to soccer specifically? Do they target players because they play soccer? I know there were some players who were kidnapped recently. Was this because they were soccer players or were they simply caught up in the general insecurity in the country? Are teams in Iraq divided on ethnic lines at all? In other words, are teams made up of mostly Sunni, Shiite, or Kurdish players and supported by the same? I'd appreciate any insight you all can provide on this or any links to websites that might do the same. Thanks!
