Thailand edge Iraq 4-3 in friendly

Thailand edged Iraq 4-3 in a friendly to record their first ever win over their West Asian rivals at the Ayutthaya Stadium on Thursday.

Four goals were scored in the first 12 minutes and as the match progressed three more were pumped in. The Thais had lost nine matches and drawn three in 12 previous meetings.

Prat Samakrat put Thailand ahead after two minutes but Imad Mohammed hauled Iraq level eight minutes later. Two minutes later Thailand reestablished their lead following an own goal by Ali Hassan.

Nirut Kumsawad increased the lead in the 12th minute to make it 3-1.

Mohammed reduced the arrears just before half time. After the break, Thailand made it 4-2 through Apichate Puttan but Mohammed was on the mark again for his hat-trick in the final minute to finish a goal behind the hosts.

Re: the Official Iraq Football Thread 2006

Focus on Younis for Iraq-China clash

AL AIN - Coach Akram Salman has pinned his side's hopes of success on the shoulders of star player Younis Mahmoud as Iraq look to put their shock 2-0 loss to Singapore behind them with victory over China in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday evening.

The Arab side has been forced to play their home fixtures of the AFC Asian Cup 2007 qualifying competition in the oasis town of Al Ain due to the continuing unrest in Iraq and, with the 1986 World Cup qualifiers playing catch-up already in Group E, the game against the Chinese has already assumed significant importance.

"We are expecting big things from Younis," said coach Salman of Mahmoud, who celebrates his 23rd birthday on Thursday.

"But overall, the team is well focused and working well as a unit."

Salman has dispensed with the services of Saudi Arabia-based Nashat Akram, Emad Mohammed of Iranian club Foolad, Haidar Abdul Razzaq of Syria's Al Ittihad and Al Ansar of Lebanon's Saleh Sadir after the quartet were deemed not to have performed to the expected standards against the Singaporeans.

In their places have come Sadir's Al Ansar club mate Hawar Mula Mohammed and Mahdi Karim and Mohamed Naser, who both play their club football for Cypriot side Apollon.

With a large number of Iraqi expats having made their home in the UAE, Salman's team is certain to have significant backing on Wednesday evening in the southern emirate while there is likely to be a small but vocal contingent of the local Chinese workforce.

The Iraq side is familiar with conditions in the UAE because in the aftermath of the overthrow of Saddam Hussain, the remnants of the team assembled in the Emirates for training as part of the long road back to international competition.

The game will also be the first in Al Ain for several of the Chinese squad - including captain Li Weifeng - since Shenzhen Jianlibao's embarrassing exit at the hands of the Emirati side in the city in November last year, when the Chinese club lost 6-0 on aggregate in the Asian Champions League.

China coach Zhu Guanghu is taking no chances and is expected to play with only one striker, a role that will be filled by Royal Antwerp forward Dong Fangzhou, who impressed against the Palestinians.

"Iraq are unquestionably an Asian power and a team to respect," said Zhu.

"We hope the team play to their strengths and achieve good results but there are six group games and even after the opening two rounds it would be still unclear who is going to progress from this group."
