"With 14 goals in 38 appearances, McLoughlin was the leading scorer of the U.S. U-17 team from 2005 to 2007." Not bad... Not ******* bad at all.
McLoughlin seemed to be very good on the ball last night. Only, a few days after signing, I think he will continue to grow.
agreed, curious to see where he would have went rhetorically in the draft. I think i would have taken him ahead of Salgado for sure (one for the future but nowhere near game ready). Nagbe is the only attacker id rate ahead of him out of all the other forwards in the draft. Like a first round pick at forward one more of those next year hopefully phases out RJ
So what kind of forward is he? From what I read about him in preseason it sounded like he was a striker, mostly a target guy. But he can play wing as well? I'm wondering if he'll be competing for time against the wingers or RJ and Lenhart.
As KMJvet wrote, Ellis is not a target kind of guy. They may sign Luzunaris, who is more of a target guy apparently. But I don't care. If Ellis plays the "1" in a 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1 or whatever it is, he may not be much at winning and holding but he can be a speed guy that can run to through balls across the offside trap. It would be no different than playing Glen, who is pretty poor at back to the goal play, as the "1" in a 4-5-1, which I think they have done more or less in the past, with Wondo playing a withdrawan role behind Glen. Quakes desperately need some pace in the front, and Ellis can provide that.
Ellis has good some potential. Easy to see that. He's easily a replacement to play out on the wing to cut in for Gjertsen or Johnson. With guys like Ampai and Ellis the Quakes can look to play for of a Barca style 4-3-3 where the front three can interchange and be constant threats because of their speed. Let's see if Yallop sees it the same way.
I wouldn't get your hopes up too high that Ellis is really all that fast. He played kinda fast in the wet weather on Saturday. But watching him the previous weekend, he struck me more as a tenacious worker who will make runs more than he did as a speed guy particularly.
Curious, did Ellis play with either of these guys on U17 team? Funny how I've never heard of him until now. 19 F Jack McInerney Philadelphia Union 18 USA Cobb Futbol Club13 M Kyle Nakazawa Philadelphia Union 23 USA UCLA I think Ellis will push Convey to LB & RJ to the bench (someday)
Could be. But I read an interview with him, probably a 3 or 4 year old interview, where he said that his strengths were ability to use both feet and speed. And the author wrote that he was "blazing fast". Granted, at this level that may translate to just good / decent speed. But we'll see. I guess that he's left-footed, but maybe he can play on the right instead of the left and push for Gjoey's spot, especially since he claims to be good with both feet.
Wouldn't it be too late for the Sounders to sign him now that he belongs to the Quakes? Will Tod Leiweke start taking after his brother and pull another LAndy?
It'll probably take a few more months to finally get used to the fact that we're now in 2011. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
the mere thought of that is orgasmic. We've got some guys in now who can get us completely away from the longball stuff.
sorry ... I didn't mean to confuse the board. I'm just a bit intrigued by how lucky we were to have this guy fall to us, especially, since Seattle appears to have let Ellis slip thru their paws. I realize that Seattle was pretty loaded with offensive talent was he was on trial but he is a local kid!! I'm going to enjoy watching this kid find his mojo with the Quakes!!
