Ampai is the real deal. I mean, he only played central midfield for the college champs.. not like he had anything to do with their winning ways.. Personally, I'd like to see him get some more playing time next game, maybe bring him in for Joey or Cronin early.
If we can convince the FO to build a cave in the SG section of the Epicenter, would...well, you know?
Ampai is quoted a bit on this piece. http://www.thedaily.com/page/2011/03/22/032211-sports-akron-1-3/
A lot of these college coaches now seem to be more in tune with what is needed on the professional level. And, Porter's success seems to underline the old adage about great players not making great coaches and average players oft time making the best coaches.
This pic was one in a series of about 40 pictures that a friend sent me. The whole set was entitled, "Images you can't see every day." The first thing I noticed after the cleats on the head of the player was the name "Akron." I wasn't sure if it was Ampai or not.

Before the start of last season's college soccer, Ampaipitakwong was projected as the #1 overall pick by some websites. Although he captained his college team to the NCAA championship game, his teammates got most of the credit. 6 of his college teammates were drafted before him. But don't be surprised if he turns out to be a better player than those 6 in the pros. "...that his possession-based play wouldn’t translate to the rough-and-tumble MLS world..." Looks like something he can start teaching his teammates.
Ampai keeps proving he belongs on the field every chance he gets. The only bad pass I saw him make last nite was a 15+ yd square ball to Ring when none of his teammates were moving any closer to help keep posession- something I saw more than once. I also saw him get a tough tackle in. When you watch him on the ball you might first think he looks slow, but he's actually very calm and patient on the ball waiting for teammates to move to space- something I expect he'll be directing them to do once he gets more confidence.
This is so. Ampai has certainly shown that he's playing better than Gjoey is right now, and by quite a stretch. (I like Gjoey, and I am frustrated by bad and declining form.) Frank should start Ampai in the next game, but I bet he doesn't. We ought to lineup like this: - - - - - Lenhart - - - - - - - - - Ellis* Convey - Dawkins - Ampai - - - - - - Ring Morrow - Ike - Jason - Beta - - - - - - Bushy If Ellis is injured or somehow not ready to go, then we should play Luzunaris to start. Of course, it's possible that Dawkins won't be ready to go either, and we'll need to start Khari. But Convey and Ampai at the outside mid spots gives us a lot more attacking creativity and options. They are both able to stretch opposing defenses and send in a good cross. Morrow and Beta at the outside backs gives us a lot of defensive speed, so Convey and Ampai don't have to be concerned about playing defense all the time. Also Convey and Ampai both send in good quality crosses and look for open attacking players. One of the things that willykirk just pointed out, is that Ampai is often looking for players to move to space. Our guys do not move well off the ball. That's bad coaching. In any case, we need for Ampai to start. Sub Gjoey in for him if he's not cutting it, but I think that Ampai has what it takes to be a starter in MLS. GO QUAKES!!!
Great post! He's calculating on the ball, he doesn't seem to get frustrated or panicky with the ball at his feet plus he's got good field vision. The kid's a real footballer, Frank would be out of his mind to start Gjertsen over him.
