it's turning out to be quite the eventful offseason for NFL players - they're getting arrested a handful at a time - Dumorvile, Dez Bryant, Marshawn Lynch - just off the top of my head. then there's Jason Kidd in the NBA
can we compile a list of NFL players facing various legal issues going into training camp? seems like it would be quite the extensive list.

so I hate to make this a race issue - but I think that's part of it. much like in society in general, black NFL athletes are getting arrested (if not incarcerated) at a much higher rate than athletes of any other race. why?

You think so? I thought this year has been relatively quiet. Compared to, say, Big Ben rape allegations, Pacman Jones shootings or Mike Vick dogfighting.

I don't think the events have been as headline grabbing as previous years. not huge offenses - mostly just minor, DUI, DV, etc. but it feels like there have been more of them.

My 2012 NFL dead period before training camps crazy thought- instead of playing musical chairs looking for the next, often elusive franchise QB, often striking out in the process, why doesn't a team go against the grain and instead come up with a run based multiple QB offense instead?

There is underutilized talent, because there are skilled running or dual threat QBs in college who don't fit the NFL mold, so they end up either needing to switch positions, struggle to hang on as backup QBs, or just never get an opportunity to play in the NFL. Consider for example-
    Josh Cribbs- undrafted
    Armanti Edwards- 3rd round
Troy Smith- 5th round, now FA out of league
    Darron Thomas-undrafted
    Jordan Jefferson- undrafted
    Terrelle Pryor- 3rd round (suppl)

Denard Robinson and Taylor Martinez fit this description too. The service academies and GT turn out QBs too like Ricky Dobbs, Beau Morgan, Josh Nesbitt. Tim Tebow was available in a trade at a very reasonable value.

The point is you could load up a bunch of guys for almost nothing- investing only middle to late round picks, paying each of them small salaries. Your high draft picks and salary cap space then becomes freed up to use for other purposes (presumably to try to build a great defense). If one of your QBs gets hurt or wants a bigger contract, you can afford to lose them. In addition, now you don't need a traditional LT, which has typically been another money eating position. You can get run blocking lineman who also tend to have less value to NFL teams. Maybe find roles for talented fullbacks or running backs who are good but aren't considered prototypical NFL backs (e.g. Rex Burkhead)

So, the idea is you stick say 3 of them in the backfield at the same time, then run a system that has a variety of misdirection play variations where all 3 could be a threat to run or throw out of the same look. Probably need 7 of these types of QBs on the active roster to make it go. It isn't the wildcat the way the Fins and other teams were doing it. You don't use RBs and try to have them pass, you use dual threat QBs who are experienced at both skills. You don't use a backup QB and have a limited package of plays as a wrinkle, instead this is full commit the only thing you practice offensively, the only thing your personnel is built to execute.

At its heart, the NFL is a copycat league. Trying the same old, same old may or may not result in success, but trying something different and not having it work is likely to get you fired from the field and maybe ridiculed so much that you might not make it to the booth.

    Steeler fan right here.

season begins. Lets close it with Giants TE Martellus Bennett showing up to camp in an interesting shirt. Looks a bit more muscular than Messi.

Brett Keisel shows up for camp. Sports downtime (defined as the period between the NBA and NHL playoffs and the beginning of the NFL preseason- nothing going on but baseball, which doesn't get interesting until late September) is almost over.

I'm not going to praise or defend MLS until they get a team close enough for me (and thousands of other American fans) to go support on something approaching a regular basis. If I have to watch The Game on TV, I'm going to opt to watch the world's best players.

the artist formerly known as Chad Johnson, Ochocinco, and now once more Chad Johnson has had a bad couple of days. arrested for domestic violence, VH1 reality show cancelled, released by the Dolphins. now, looking for work. his star has fallen a long way and in a hurry. from 15 catches and 1 TD all of last season, to this. I guess the Dolphins said this wasn't exactly strike 1 with Chad, but I still don't particularly like when an organization fires or disciplines a person before he/she is actually convicted of something. it seems like with certain crimes - such as domestic violence and sexual assault, child rape, child porn, DUIs etc., people don't wait for a guilty verdict. just being indicted or arrested is sufficient for people to decide you're guilty.

I get what the Dolphins are doing. You're right- even the appearance of impropriety can cost someone money or their job. The sad fact is, parents are allowing athletes to be role models even when they're not qualified, and the NFL accepts that parental view because they make more money than if they didn't accept it. But I've said many times that high-level, high-earning young athletes need to wait until they're older to marry. A few years out of the spotlight can do wonders for a player's maturity and will weed out some of the women who might be most likely to say or do something that creates a conflict. There's no need to get physical with a woman, Chad. If she isn't doing what you want, split and find one who will. It's real simple.

I think it has more to do with Chad's inability to catch the ball, which he demonstrated in his last game with the Fins, last season with the Pats, and driving Carson Palmer to the point of retirement in Cincy.
He isn't young anymore, he's old and slower. If he was Dez Bryant he probably gets another chance. Old, slow, ball dropping Chad isn't worth the baggage. When an athlete gets older, they need to work harder, because they can't rely so much on just talent and athleticism. It is one thing to do these outside TV things, as long as you're putting the work in when it is time to go to work. Chad strikes me as a guy who wasn't willing to be that committed, which is why Bruschi called him out last year and why he finds himself out of work again. At least with a guy like Randy Moss the commitment level goes up and down, plus he still has the speed. Chad, there doesn't seem to be an up, just a perpetual low, more flash and self promotion than sweat.

It may well be, but I'd understand if they let him go for the incident alone.

But that's got nothing to do with his maturity level or that of the women in his life. I'm saying that a player who just hits and runs during his career will have a much better chance of finding a bride who's not starstruck (isn't looking to be seen with Chad) than one who tries out a relationship while he's still (pretty much) a star athlete. You screw the gold diggers (but do not skeet in them) and then when you're tired of that, marry the hometown girl who put up with you when you were a HS star- if she's still there and hasn't done enough screwing of her own to make you think she isn't worthy of being the mother of your children and the moral foundation of your family.

I hope that the Dolphins are being truthful about this being not exactly his first strike, and that's why they decided to cut him. with something like a DUI, it's usually pretty clear that you are drunk, and more than likely the arrest will result in a conviction. but with something like domestic violence, where the alleged assault usually occurs behind closed doors without any witnesses, it's a lot more difficult to know up front what actually happened. whereas in the old days, the cops would show up and tell the parties to knock it off, the way I understand it, in most states, these days if the cops show up at the house, at least one, but often both parties are getting arrested no matter what the story is. and many of these cases end up getting dismissed for lack of evidence to support one or the other story. so I find that handing out discipline in the case of a DV arrest to be a bit rash.
I feel bad for the guy. he seems like a pretty good guy, who just wants to have fun, and doesn't really have record of run-ins with the law or the league, but like you guys have been saying, what he might have been able to get away with when he was young and talented, he can no longer get away with now that he's old and slow.

I hope they resolve this ref lockout. Overall, I actually like the quality of the refs compared to MLB and the NBA. It would be bad if they had to use replacement refs in the regular season.

I think its worth keeping in mind that he persuaded the Dolphins to sign him, it wasn't really their idea.

He lobbied for a job with them, they turned him down, he promised he could help them, they worked him out and said "Oh all right" and the next thing they know the headlines say "Dolphins receiver arrested." I have some sympathy for them in the light of this history...

I guess a player just has to keep in mind that as he gets older and his skills deteriorate, his latitude to get away with shit diminishes. not only can you no longer get away with the shit you used to be able to, but even some of the pranks and crap you pulled earlier in your career could come back to haunt you, because that's the reputation you established for yourself. I just feel a little bad for the guy because he has never been in trouble with a team (like TO has), with the league, or the law. but his pranks could be considered a distraction by a team.

I've never had a problem with his clowning around. It is still a game and it is supposed to be fun. When you get an opportunity with the Pats and Tom Brady as your QB on a team that has need at WR and make a mess of it as well as a chance to win a Super Bowl ring, that should be a huge red flag. You can't ask for a better situation and if you can't get motivated to learn the offense and work to get to the level that Brady trusts you, something is wrong.
