This is tricky because "Mancini" and "Manchini" both look like Italian words, and they're both pronounced differently than how it would read in English.

    Mancini -- English: man-see-nee Italian: man-chee-nee
    Manchini -- English: man-chee-nee Italian: man-kee-nee

"Can you pass me the can of soda?"

In my dialect of English, there's only one way to pronounce "can", regardless of whether or not it's a noun.

The words "caught" and "cot" have the exact same pronunciation in Western Pennsylvania. In New York City, those two words are pronounced quite differently. Your regional dialect plays a huge role on how you think certain words are pronounced. Maybe that's why there's been a whole lot of confusion in this thread. ;)

Impressive. damnecuadorian speaks Italian and western Pennsylvanianese! :D

Well, in eastern PA your first "can" is like the first syllable of Canada and your second rhymes with "fan".

And I have no idea why I got in on this. As soon as I find my mind I'm going to quit!

yeah, I was wondering if I was just unaware of some other proununciation of River Plate. I alwayd did think that it was pronounced like the plate you eat on. Am I wrong?

Is it, has it ever been, Plaa-tey?!

Ummm.. the way *I* say Canada, the first syllable does rhyme with fan. ;)

I have no idea how you eastern Pennsylvanians pronounce Canada..

Ditto. Which is why this conversation was ridiculous from the beginning!

    Apparently. ;)

Of course, last night Nabil kept referring to Mark "Schwarzzzer". First time I laughed. Second time I shook my head. Third time I cringed. Then I thought, WTF, it doesn't really matter. Still----

How did this all start? "She's easy on the eyes, though." Nice job, ElJefe. :D

I heard her say River Plah-tey the other day, which I suppose is phonetically correct in spanish, yet proves to me she knows zero about the sport.

OK, so either I'm not reading your transliteration correctly, or I don't know the proper pronunciation of "Mark Schwarzer" either, because I'm not seeing what's wrong.

He held out the "z" sound for a long time?

IIRC instead of using the "tz" sound he just used the "z" sound.

I don't doubt she knows her stuff as was intimated by Derek Taylor's twitter account. But I think it's more a matter of reading from the prompter. see: Unprofessional Foul
It's exactly what I said about the Brazillian names like Mancini or Lucio. Also in that article it says that her prior experience was in radio and color commentary - where she talks off the cuff. I think if/when she gets more comfortable with the format she'll get better and won't need to read as much as fill in bullet points.

But the effervescent bubbliness seems like it will never change :)

You would think she would pronounce Milan the right way then. Or the "eurosnob" or "fashionista" way as proposed by an earlier poster. Weird. I agree, blackhornet, this may just be a reading of the teleprompter thing and she has to get used to it..

I follow soccer as intently as anybody. But I'd be in the same boat as Lara Baldesarra if I had to start saying all these names out loud. I have absolutely no idea how half of them are pronounced.

I am willing to accept her annoying voice and crazy pronunciations just for being a Milan and Azzurri fan.
