If every Roma player is inside their own half, and the defenders are sitting deep, what space is there for our attackers to even get into and Carrick to find them? This is up to our attackers to come and make something happen. Pulling players out of position with their movement. If Ronaldo is standing open Carrick can find him, but what point is there passing the ball to him when as soon as it gets close, he's going to be closed down?
If I could answer these questions, then I'd be a DLP. Seriously though, WWPD. What would Pirlo do? I doubt that he'd sit back and pass back and forth to Gattuso and Seedorf (or whoever). I know Carrick's job is a little different as he doesn't get the keys to the midfield, but he's got to make something happen. It's like you with women: If they won't give it, sometimes you have to take it. Carrick needs to try to force the issue sometimes.
Pirlo was an attacking midfielder when he started playing and he has played there on numerous occasions for Italy, and the Olympic team when he was being called up. His mind set, skill set, etc is more exspansive than Carrick. Since Carrick cannot be given the keys, I like him the way he is now.
I'll agree that he's better than the alternative. I'd still like to see Carrick try to impose his will. If he doesn't then he's in danger of losing his position to an inferior player.
The person who makes that change will be making the club suffer with a decision like that. [in regards to an inferior player] But like I said he was never going to be the 1st name on the team sheet to begin with.
---------Foster----------- ----Ferdinand--Vidic--------- Neville----------------Evra-- ---Hargreaves--Carrick------ -Ronaldo--Tevez/Scholes----Rooney ----------F. Torres----------- With Scholes playing further up, if he could get back in that mind set.
This goes hand in hand with Ferguson's expectations of Carrick since he joined. He said he'd make more of Carrick than just a DLP. I was under the impression that he's on his way there and last year (or earlier this year, I can't recall exactly) I said he'd directly replace Scholes and play a more attacking role. I think I'll still stand by this statement but I also think and I'm more certain about this now than ever before, is that we won't really see this aggressive Carrick until Scholes is out of the team, and a Hargreaves is in. This will allow Carrick to force himself up. He isn't a Pirlo and his game is definitely not as expansive, but then again we have seen instances of him freed up (Roma at home last year for example) and what he does is pretty neat. I have no doubt he can do that once he plays with Hargreaves or any type of enforcer.
If he does, it will make our team that much more vulnerable. It's a catch 22 ( I think) We can't rely on Scholes for backup for a box-to box Carrick.
ok, I misunderstood then. By taking control, I want Carrick to go up more and make those plays from just outside the box (Like Pirlo)
Err, so much for this discussion then. That's put us in a precarious position. Bad for Carrick as well because by the time he gets back a new first xi may have been formed and more importantly, settled. These things always happen at the worst time for players.
Holy god, I just saw this. Carrick out for 6, Hargreaves for a month.. Do we draft in O'Shea until Fletch is back in 3 weeks?
I dont think it will be TOO much of a problem. Wigan at home, villa away and Boro at home aswell as away to Dynamo Kiev, before Hargreaves is back. I think Anderson mite start along side scholes against wigan.
He broke a toe while playing against Sporting Lisbon youngsters about two weeks ago so it could about six weeks
Too bad for Carrick. Maybe Anderson gets more time but I think a Scholes Anderson midfield is way too light defensively. I think it is more liekly O'shea plays centrally and if Wes is still out either Simpson or Pique slots in the back. What about Pique playing in midfield? Didn't he play there some for Zaragoza?
