I'm gonna be embarrassed if it turns out that the interview is for real and dates from a couple of days ago, but I'd willing to risk it and say:

    a) likely not a couple of days ago.
    b) likelihood of interview being real: not 100%.
    c) Spahic in top two defs in Messi's opinion: bhahaha but sorry no.

Not that B-H's players don't need recognition. One of the underrated NTs imo, and one of the smart picks for a "black horse" team in 2014 to advance to, say, quarters, if they get it totally right.

I also did a search for "Spahic" on both SPORT and Mundo Deportivo and no recent articles came up with Messi. If Leo had mentioned anything about who he believes the best defenders are both those websites would surely have an article on it. So yeah, I'm leaning on this being a fabricated story.

Is there even an award for 'best defender'?
I remember UEFA used to hand out awards for 'best defender', 'best midfielder' and 'best forward' and then an overall "UEFA Best Club Footballer of the Year" award but that was scrapped in favor of the new "UEFA Best Player in Europe" award that Iniesta won out over Messi and C.Ronaldo during the Champions League group stage draw.
And apart from the Ballon d'Or, Coach of the Year and Goal of the Year (Puskas) awards I'm not aware of any FIFA award for "best defender".

Yeah, Bosnia have a solid national team, no doubt. Hopefully they make it to the World Cup this time, would love to see the likes of Dzeko, Mujdza, Pjanic, and Salihovic there in Brazil.

But yeah, in all honesty, I doubt Messi said that about Spahic. I haven't seen anything like that lately either so it may just be fabricated.

Tbf, we've gotten a lot of help in our title winning campaign from Madrid, so I guess only fair we give something back.

I think the hatred is strong with him. I think he is more anti-Barcelona than a Madrid fan. I mean... unless you're just a troll, who in their right mind would pick name that includes your rival instead of your own team :whistling:

Messi now has 19 goals in 13 games in La Liga. Average of 1.46 per game and on a pace ahead of last year. That is astounding. 13 out of those goals have also come in away games and only 1 overall from the PK spot. Ronaldo on the other hand has 12 goals 4 of them coming from the PK spot.

Goals are goals though, doesn't matter if they are penalties or not. Messi is the superior player, you don't even have to take off minor things like that.

Assuming Messi breaks Muller's record now, which he should, he'll have hit 30 goals in just a half season! Absolutely mindblowing that.

I was thinking the same thing. "There's only one Michael Owen..." One time when people thought he was actually WPOTY material.

I think once Messi wins this years and hopefully next year, and he then has done it 5 years in a row, then no one can argue

People will always argue as long as he hasn't won a World Cup.

Yep. Also "can't perform without Xavi and Iniesta" and "let's see if he could make it in EPL".

The same can be said of Pele and also lets see an English man make it in the La Liga or Serie A

^ Was just saying that no matter what Messi does, everyone won't think he's the best ever. Or even the best now.

Its typical blown up by English media in particular, you see his WC goal against Argentina was voted #2 goal of century in 2000 because it was scored just 2 years earlier. Now make another poll 15 years later, Maradona goal will stay on top, Owen goal will probably in #12. He fall in same category with the likes of Saviola & Robinho. A player that are better during their early years instead during their prime age.
