    SHAH ALAM : Kelantan skipper Mohd Badhri Radzi was the biggest winner at the National Football Awards ceremony on Saturday.

    The 31-year-old picked up the Best Midfielder and the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards after helping the Red Warriors retain the FA Cup. He also scored an impressive 16 goals this season.

    The hardworking midfielder dedicated his awards to his parents and team-mates.

    “ This is the sweetest moment in my career as a football player. The best midfielder accolade was expected but not the MVP award, ” said Badhri.

    “ These awards will spur me to do better next season with Kelantan. We have a tough season ahead after losing a number of key players,” he added.

    The Most Promising Young Player Award was won by newcomer Junior Eldstal. The 22-year-old proved to be a revelation in his first season with Sarawak, helping the Crocs win the Premier League title undefeated this season.

    It was a season to remember for Eldstal as he also featured for the national senior team in friendlies against Chelsea and Barcelona. He also played a key role in the national Under-23’s Merdeka Tournament win in August.

    Eldstal, who is of Malaysian-Swedish parentage, was included in the team for the Myanmar SEA Games squad but was ruled out last week after failing to recover from a back injury.

    Eldstal said the award would help to soften the blow of not being with the team when Malaysia defend the SEA Games gold in Naypyitaw.
    “ It’s a dream come true for me ... I never expected to win the award on my debut season,” said Eldstal. “I’ll focus on my recovery after this. The doctor has advised me to rest for three months. ”

    Badhri proves a point

    HE might not have been good enough for outgoing national coach K. Rajagobal but Badhri Radzi is now Malaysia's best player after bagging the FA of Malaysia's most valuable player award in Shah Alam yesterday.

    Kelantan skipper Badhri ended the three-year reign of ex-teammate Norshahrul Idlan Talaha as MVP and also picked up the best midfielder gong with teammates Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, for a fourth consecutive year, and Norfarhan Muhammad winning the best goalkeeper and striker awards respectively.

    On a day when Darul Ta'zim and Selangor were shut out of the National Football Awards, Sarawak midfielder Junior Eldstal crowned a long journey from Slimbridge to Kuching by being selected the most promising player while Baihakki Khaizan, the bedrock of LionsXII's march to the Super League title, towered over the rest in being named best defender.

    Dollah Salleh's reward for leading Pahang to their first Malaysia Cup title in 21 years was the best coach award while Armed Forces striker Marlon Alex James retained the award for the best foreign player in the M-League.

    Rajagobal often favoured Safiq Rahim, who won the best midfielder award the previous two years, to Badhri for international matches but the latter has vowed to fight for a place in the national team when FAM names a new coach early next year.

    "I thought I might win one but not two awards. The MVP award came as a surprise," said Badhri, 31, who only made two appearances for the national team under Rajagobal, after the awards ceremony yesterday.

    "These awards are the result of the support from my teammates and fans. I have only one desire left to fill and that is to play for the national team. It is up to the next national coach and if it's fated, then I'll be there."

    For Junior, 22, winning the most promising player award softened the blow of missing the Sea Games in Naypyidaw after an operation to fix a back injury means he is out of action for the next two months.

    "I was not expecting this at all, it is a real honour and I'm very happy," said Sabah-born Junior, who only joined Sarawak from English amateur club Slimbridge in April.

    "I was gutted when told I would miss the Sea Games but winning the Merdeka Tournament (with the national Under-23 team) gave me a lot of encouragement. Not being there (in Naypyidaw) to support the team is heartbreaking."

    " I'll miss the start of the season and now it's just about doing the rehab and getting back on the pitch as soon as possible."

    FAM AWARDS -- Most valuable player and best midfielder: Badhri Radzi (Kel); Best striker : Norfarhan Muhammad (Kel);

    Best defender : Baihakki Khaizan (LionsXII); Best goalkeeper: Khairul Fahmi Che Mat (Kel); Most promising player: Junior Eldstal (Sar); Best foreign player: Marlon Alex James (AF); Best coach: Dollah Salleh (Pah);

    Best referee : Nagor Amir Noor Mohamed; Best assistant referee: Sabri Mat Daud; Best FA : Terengganu; Best club : Sime Darby; Best fan club: Kelantan Fan Club; Special awards for ex-general secretaries: Datuk Seri Paul Mony Samuel, Datuk Dell Akbar Khan, Datuk Seri Dr Ibrahim Saad, Lt Jen (R) Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad.
