MONTREAL – With just 16 months from a debut in Major League Soccer (MLS), the Montreal Impact announced on Wednesday a unique player development structure in Canada with the creation of three new youth teams (U14, U15, and U16) as part of its Academy, as well as the founding of a sport-études program in partnership with Édouard-Montpetit high school, which is part of the Commission scolaire de Montréal. These three teams, made up of over 70 new players, will complement the U21 reserve team which is already in place.

“This is a very special day in the history of the Montreal Impact,” said Impact and Saputo Stadium president Joey Saputo. “With the addition of these three teams and the founding of the sport-études program, we are putting a unique structure in place that will guarantee the development of local players for our club. It is a substantial and necessary investment to better develop our future. We will put all the necessary resources at the players’ disposal, for both human and professional growth. We are proud to be partners with Édouard-Montpetit, an institution that is at the forefront of academics and sport.”

well done, montreal impact and its owners!! this bodes well for soccer development in canada and in 4-5 years, we might see some quality young players coming out onto the fields in montreal, to, and vancouver-- i just hope they decide to play for canada!

the only thing that could try and ruin it would be the meddling, incompetent egomaniacs at the CSA

The Montreal Impact’s reserve team played its first game of the 2011 season on May 6. However, the players have been training all winter with one objective in mind: continue their development in order to become a professional one day.
Working with each of them daily, U21 Academy head coach Philippe Eullaffroy noticed, in just one year, that many young players have realized that their dream could become reality.
After existing for a few years as:

    the Trois-Rivières Attak
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trois-Rivières_Attak

The team was repatriated to Montreal for the start of the 2010 season. This decision turned out to be a judicious one as the proximity to the big club helped the players realize how close they were to their dream. “The young players become more conscious of the fact that they would be given an opportunity to play with the big club,” said Philippe Eullaffroy. “This idea was reinforced because some of them practiced with the Impact at the start of the season, and some were even added to the game sheet for the team’s first game.” Proof in the pudding: while in Tampa Bay for the team’s season-opener on April 9, Mircea Ilcu made an appearance in the game, while Kevin Luarca, Amine Meftouh and Karl Ouimette were on the bench. Reserve team players regularly practice with the first team with head coach Marc Dos Santos at the helm.

Three players are from the 2010 Montreal Impact lineup––forward Reda Agourram, midfielder Pierre-Rudolph Mayard and goalkeeper Andrei Badescu––played for the Academy before joining the first team.
In 2010, goalkeeper Dominique Provost, defender Bonheur Aubey and midfielders Kevin Cossette and Bastien Bourgault were called up for matches with the first team, while several other U-21’s took part in training sessions with the first team.

This is the last rung of the Academy ladder, the final step before signing with the Pros. The U21’s play in the Canadian Soccer League (http://canadiansoccerleague.ca), which is Canada’s only professional league sanctioned by the Canada Soccer Association. In 2010, the league featured 13 clubs, in most part based in the Greater Toronto Area. The top eight teams in the standings advance to the playoffs. The U-21 team plays its home games at Saputo Stadium.

MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact U21 Academy (2-2-1) and Toronto Croatia (0-1-1) tied 1-1, Saturday afternoon, at Marie-Victorin Sports Complex, in the home opener of the Impact reserve team.

“The result reflects the match,” said U21 Academy head coach Philipppe Eullaffroy. “We played against a strong team, the best we have met so far this season. We played well collectively but we lacked fluidity in our passing game. The players responded well to the physical challenge and I think it’s the greatest satisfaction today.”

MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact U21 and Capital City FC played to a 1-1 draw, Saturday afternoon, at Marie-Victorin Sports Complex, in the first match of a home-and-away aggregate goal series in the quarterfinal round of the Canadian soccer league (CSL) playoffs

MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact U21 and Capital City FC played to a 1-1 draw, Saturday afternoon, at Marie-Victorin Sports Complex, in the first match of a home-and-away aggregate goal series in the quarterfinal round of the Canadian soccer league (CSL) playoffs.

Capital City took the lead at the 35th minute of play, when midfielder William Beauge received a long pass down the right wing, controlled the ball toward the center of the field and took a low shot from 25 meters out, beating Impact goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to his left.
The Impact U21 tied the game at the 62nd minute, when midfielder Wandrille Lefevre scored on a penalty, beating Capital City goalkeeper Clinton Irwin with a low shot to his right.

"We fully deserved the tie," said Impact U21 head coach Philippe Eullaffroy. "We were lacking toughness on 1-on-1 situations during the first half, but we played a really good second half. By increasing our intensity and physical play, we gained mobility, we were more creative and we increased our game speed, which created problems for the opponent. We are going to play the away game with the same attitude."
The U21s will play the away game of the series on October 16 at 3pm in Ottawa.

    ASSESSING THE IMFC RESERVES SEASON
    [IMG]

With a sixth place finish synonymous with a place in the quarter-finals in the Canadian Soccer League (CSL), the Montreal Impact reserve team improved upon its standing from 2010, and despite being eliminated by Capital City FC, the U21s walked away from the 2011 season with many positives, including a spot in the playoffs, something the team failed to do the year prior.

“That was our objective and we were able to attain it,” said the head coach of the reserve team, Philippe Eullafroy. “This is proof that we’ve progressed. Playing in elimination games was an important experience for our young players. Even though we are a developmental team, we have to cultivate a winning attitude. The reserve team must understand the importance of winning at this level.”

    Academy preseason opens with enthusiasm
U21 team step up its game at training camp with MLS on the horizon
    [IMG]

“The biggest difference from last year is that we have young players who are more motivated and attentive because they know that the next level is the highest in North America, and they could play against the likes of Thierry Henry and David Beckham. The quality of play from last season compared to this season is already higher. And if the players don’t make the effort, they won’t get that chance.”
“Our main objective is to bring some Quebec players to the MLS team. Eventually, we would like to see 25% of the roster made up of local players, say some five years down the line, but only time will tell.”

For now, the Impact U21s will look to a couple of young players who are on the cusp of breaking out to lead them on the pitch this season. Midfielder Alessandro Riggi and forward Anthony Jackson-Hamel, both 19, have shown well in camp thus far.

    U21 Academy already bearing fruit
Crépeau, Ouimette, Agourram and Ilcu have spent time with first team
    [IMG]
Crepeau joined Impact youth alums Mircea Ilcu and Reda Agourram in Mexico, both invited on tryouts with the MLS club. Ilcu started four of 11 games played last season with the pros, totalling 317 minutes, scoring one goal (a game winner) and adding one assist. Fellow striker Agourram, 21, has scored two goals in 30 appearances for the Impact after joining the first team in 2010 from the reserve side.

With four players developed through the Impact reserve system in camp, the future looks bright for the Impact and for soccer in Quebec.
