Anybody else see this tweet from Arturo?

"Nightmare is officially over. Time to forget about this year and get ready for bigger and better things #newbeginnings"

Don't release before expansion draft, he might get picked.

I suspect he was told: You will not be on the protect list and you and your agent should be prepared to look for a new gig, you will be released if you are not picked by Montreal.

If he thinks being here; where he was given the #10, where there a numerous Spanish speaking teammates, where he was paid $200k+, where we finished 3rd overall and had a chance to win multiple trophies, where we play attack-minded soccer, and where we had numerous injuries/call-ups/suspensions so he had plenty of opportunities to play; was a nightmare. I shudder to think what he will think the '12 season will be like.

I'll give this to Arturo, and I mean it as a giant compliment: this year could not have been easy for him, and he never once complained publicly. He always seemed to train hard, and to be supportive on the bench. But this is a high profile (for MLS) player who often didn't even make the 18, who is a key contributor for his NT whose play suffered while at RSL, who was often played out of position, and who nonetheless acted professionally throughout the season.

So, a tip of the hat to Mr. Alvarez.

You are truly a glass is all full type of guy and I compliment you for your always positive spin on issues. still I don't think I will be to upset when Arturo moves on to another MLS club.

Oh, I am 100% glad he's moving on, and think it was a poor signing to begin with. I'm just saying that many professional players would've been clubhouse distractions. Heck, Espy and Sabo pout if they get pulled from a game fifteen minutes early, much less don't make the 18.

It seems to me that letting Montreal know they can pick him up after the expansion just as easily isn't that great of a move...

where do you get that impression?
It could easily (though hopefully not) be interpreted that Arturo was told he was going to be protected and thus the nightmare of having to find a new team and such is over...

I was thinking that if Montreal knew he was going to be released, then they (assuming Arturo was open to go there) could sign him after selecting someone else in the expansion draft.

If they wanted Arturo, but did not know if he would be released, then they would be more inclined to select him. Thus protecting other possible draftees.

Montreal won't pick him up either way, I bet.
Far too much of a salary to pay for a player with one foot and who had very little minutes in the previous season.

I bet Alvarez ends up at some team in central america when all is said and done for 2012. I don't know anybody in MLS that would want him...

That's not how it works anyway. He's not a true "free agent" but would go through the re-entry draft.

They would likely be competing with other clubs for his services, likely in phase 2 of the re-entry draft at a reduced price.

Maybe the tweet is a reference to an RSL/Montreal deal that sends them AA and keeps them out of our business during the expansion draft.

Maybe they're cool with extremely left-footed players at l'Impact.

Let me echo this. I interviewed Arturo a few times this year, one reason is because I have always been a fan of his. He never had anything negative to say, he even went on how great the fans, team and staff was. Super classy guy. I can only imagine as a professional it just didn't go as well as he wanted it to this year.

Good to know. I forgot about the re-entry draft. How does that work exactly? Teams can waive players still under contract, and if no one wants them at their current salary, then they get a pay cut?

I feel lousy. I've bagged on AA all year and you mods are right. He's been a class act. He has every right to say "nightmare is over" because I'm sure the season was that for him. He's been nicer than us.

I'm moving myself out of the good person pool, but not yet into the Hitler Sandusky bucket.

I think it's hilarious than an Arturo Alvarez discussion is being conducted in the Ex-RSL Players thread while he is (for the time being) very much still an RSL player. How much will your asses be chapped if he's still an RSL player next year? The meltdown here would be epic.

In fact, just for fun I hope JK starts his next press conference by saying how valuable AA is to the team and how RSL has locked him down for 10 years and made him a DP with a $500k salary. The collective look on all y'all's faces would be priceless.
