if they were consistent they'd support the Dems if they were to put up an effort to change the laws to get Bill Clinton a third term... After all, they no longer seem to mind questions of character/philandering
Herb Caen was not a gossip columnist. He was the inventor of 3 dot journalism, an early supporter of gay rights, and had his finger on the daily pulse of "Baghdad by the Bay". He was the first read back when the San Francisco Chronicle was more than a fish wrap. He'd of written the Sperminator off quicker than a trip across the Bay Bridge for lunch.
personally i always started with charles mccabe, then stanton delaplane... and only then herb caen. but after thes first two died/retired, only mister 3-dot was left... he was indeed a gossip columnist, though not only that, far from it. he was a very, VERY natty dresser... after a friend pointed him out to me (the same gobsmack as when a flatmate in amsterdam informed me that bearded old fart down the street was... john peel) it was easy to spot him downtown... i think he walked from the chron building to lunch... masa's, postrio, another place on geary that was impossible to get into (unless you were herb caen)... i forget the name. i have a vague souvenir that he was often carrying a little dog... maybe not. i'm eternally indebted to him for one of the quotes i use (usually without credit, that's the caen style) most often... it's about my hometown... "the only culture in salinas is agriculture". btw, the chronicle has always been fishwrap. the examiner was a slight cut above... but even in those days, and even in the city those who wanted "real news" (eeewwww...) got the san jose mercury.

Yeah, he was. He loved writing about O.J.'s taste for blondes back when Simpson was finishing his career for the Niners. Got that one right. All true but he was still a gossip columnist at heart, despite the occasional serious column.
The Black Walnut isn't quitting the race. He's just warming up! I dare you: http://www.hermancain.com/wfhc
Laid back... But I just popped onto CNN, and this headline floored me: Herman Cain meets today with his wife to discuss his campaign's future. Now, I'm not saying family is not important, nor that a candidate's wife should not have a substantial say in a decision that will completely impact every aspect of her life. But I just don't think I've ever seen that family dynamic framed like a bi-partisan sub-committee before. But of course, we've never been Cain'd before.
It kinda implies Herm doesn't talk to his wife very much. But you know, if she wanted his time, she should be sending meeting invites to his Outlook.
It's a very cynical and calculated move, IMHO. Basically, he's flipping the script to "if his wife is OK with this stuff from his private life, then it's really none of your business".
Something tells me that that image and slogan is going to go through some serious Internet Adjustments in the near future.
must spread rep! of all the things you couldn't make up, the is perhaps the one you could make up the least. i love the debate about the woman in front: in fact she can be seen as asian, hispanic or amerindian, giving the picture the most bang for the buck possible.
