I'm blushing. Didn't even get through half of that. But more power to you, Hope.

Sorry to chime in all of a sudden, but I wanted to say that I agree that Frauen-Bundesliga should be currently considered the best league in the world: high technical level, serious competition for the first place (teams like 1FFC Turbine Potsdam, 1FFC Frankfurt, FCR Duisburg, are all legitimate competitors, and there are quite good "second rank" teams), a right number of teams, big name players from Europe and the world, one of the best media-coverages in the women's football (and that last thing is very important in my opinion). I am sorry but I guess that, despite it sports a lot of the best players in the world, a WPS with 5 teams just can't compete with Bundesliga in terms of overall quality of the league and interest of the competition.

Division 1 Féminine (french league) is also quite good, although the quality of media-coverage is really quite poor...

In the end, when you talk about good interesting leagues to watch, don't totally discount Nadeshiko L-league in Japan: it has just japanese players in it (apart from INAC south-korean nationals), but it's a really enjoyable league, with at least 4-5 very decent teams on 10, and, after WWC 2011, the level of the competition and the interest by media and audiences has rised up a lot, making it a quite good show in my opinion. Not the best women's league in the world for sure, but a more than decent league, compared to what we actually see around in the world...

    How exactly?

(meaning two things: 1) I am not living in USA, so I am actually not up-to-date about what's exactly happening; 2) things can really get more ridiculous than this?)

WPS & mJ reached an agreement - suit has been dropped - to let mJ play as a WPS exhibition team for 2012 and 2013, seven or so games a year it sounds like. Abby, Hope, etc. sound slated to continue playing for mJ.

Basically, mJ = Harlem Globetrotters of women's soccer

shirley you can't be serious. i mean, your proposition is valid and true but can you really call 5 teams a league? 2 games and 1 bye each and every matchday? already the divisional separation so dear to north american sports are by the wayside, now playoffs, their sine qua non, become perfectly ubuesque. a whole regular season with the objective of eliminating one team?

this half-fig-half-grape arrangement may convince the USSF to try to convince FIFA that this is all very splendid but really it's worse than a non-solution. on the one hand it doesn't precipitate the concentration of talent our learned colleague mentioned; on the other, of the negatives i mentioned only the problem of weekly byes is (partially) solved.

so much for the fish side. now for the fowl (foul): if MJ is poison, how is that poison less lethal when only ingested exhibitionally? and if players on the five official teams avoid the scarlet R (for rogue) that opprobium will be concentrated on MJ's (boxx, rampone, wambach, solo...no biggie): are they still "out of contract"? eligible for london 2012? no idea of the answers, but you'll grant the question is toxic.

now the cherry on top: imagine the globetrotters (errr... magic jack) end up with a winning record... or cataclysmic catastrophe, the best record? exhibition playoffs? an exhibition trophy presentation? the end of the world as we know it?

Well, I can take the FA WSL example, the current format has 8 teams but four are good enough, 2 are decent/ok and 2 are poor. I perosnally would reduce it to 6 teams and have them to play each other 4 times ie 24 games.
I mean finding 120 international level players is not easy in here :p

Of course the traditional format is more attractive but less competitive.
And I find it unbelievablethat Borislow is allowed to stay around despite being a total trouduc .

I for one will miss the occasional petty bickering in these parts about what's the world's best league. And I agree with one little birdy who tweeted that the most important thing now is to get Melis back to Sweden, pronto. They should do an airlift and call it Operation Cow'sArse/Banjo, that has a nice whimsical military ring to it. (Hoping that saying these things doesn't unleash The Wrath of Kool-aide.)

But seriously, what a bummer. And, as so many others have noted, their timing of the announcement was peculiar at best. Hope it doesn't turn out to be positively harmful for the players, who are quite justified in feeling massively screwed over, as far as I can tell.

Jennifer Nobis, American playing for Damallsvensk club Piteå, says in this article that she is disappointed but not surprised about WPS. She says that in the US it's all about money and not passion for the game. She suggests that Americans who want to see how to run a league take a look at Germany's and Sweden's leagues, and see how they do it.

The reporter, either taken slightly aback or feeling slightly gleeful, observes that going around learning from other countries does not seem like 'the american way'. Nobis gets a little sarky, saying that no, because we are always right and we like to do things our own way, so it will never happen, but maybe we won't ever have a league either. And then she laughed, bitterly.

I notice that she's still saying 'we' as opposed to 'they' when she speaks of Americans. I give it, mmm, another year before that fixes itself.

Small vent, carried over from the WPS forum, about how the Frauen Bundesliga gets so few fans even though that's the way we're supposed to do it here in the U.S. (And then another poster said 'It is if you want a league that lasts more than 3 years,' which is spot on. )

    Anyway:

People want leagues that last. Fine. But they also want -- deep breath -- stadiums close to their homes, that have concessions and real bathrooms and souvenirs and ample parking and are close to public transportation, but only if these stadiums are soccer-sized and only if they have the right lines painted on them, they want TV coverage for all the teams, every game, on TV stations that 99% of the U.S. has access to, and if not TV, then webcasts of every game, but not webcasts that have some stats guy calling out the player numbers, they want personalized jerseys for sale, and in men's sizes, they want professional websites updated constantly, they want Twitter and Facebook and players and owners to interact with the fans via such social media, they want players paid professional wages, not like men's professional wages, but like women's professional players, but definitely not like normal Office Joe wages, which are considered substandard and just shy of having to live on food stamps, they want ALL the media coverage they can get, on blogs and TV and every single paper, but it has to be the right kind of coverage and not negative coverage, they want free puppies and unicorn rides and deep pocketed owners that care deeply about little girls growing up to have the chance to play pro soccer, but owners who don't care about how much money they're losing ... But yeah, of course, they all want a league to last more than 3 years.

I think lowered expectations from everyone would be the best thing for the future of women's soccer in this country. Start small. Tiny, even. Grow it slowly, but surely, whenever and however you can. You're never going to be the NFL, NBA or MLB. You're not even going to be MLS. At some point, you may become the WNBA. But you have to be around longer than 3 years to accomplish that and you can't go around hoping the next big soccer tourney is going to magically fix all your problems.

Sorry. I keep seeing the same things posted over and over and it's driving me crazy.

I agree with everything you posted. Start small and work up from there.

You want the game to grow as a whole? Go to see the teams you can locally. W League and WPSL both have many teams you can check out.

I have a couple of vital questions before I get fully behind them: if a person is allergic to horses, do you think that carries over to unicorns? And could I have a kitten instead of a puppy?

    Unicorns are magical, so they're hypo-allergenic. ;)

And yes, kittens will be available in lieu of puppies.
