Those guys seem way too idiotic to waste your time on. You can't debate crazy Colbert was awesome last night. Besides having Iggy Pop on, who cussed uncensored throughout his song, he took Jason Collins' coming out as an excuse to poke some fun at MLS It might still be my signature by the time you read this
CAtching up on TDS and TCR.. great segment... full version here http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-april-24-2013/weak-constitution Weak Constitution Following the Boston bombing, the freedom lovers at Fox jettison Constitutional amendments like Han Solo dumping his cargo at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser. Awesome segment from Colbert..... http://www.colbertnation.com/the-co...8/april-23-2013/austerity-s-spreadsheet-error Austerity's Spreadsheet Error Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff's 2010 debt study inspires austerity around the world, but grad student Thomas Herndon debunks the results
The three part series where John Oliver went to Australia and interviewed all sorts of bigwigs about their gun control laws was all kinds of awesome. Absolutely worth your time if you haven't seen it.
It was awesome, but it was also infuriating given that we don't appear likely to take even much more modest actions in response to tragedy. Plus, it prompted me to re-acquaint myself (and I don't think I even knew half of the details until now) with the Port Arthur massacre.....absolutely horrific.
I'm no fan of Oliver but the show is now much more watchable with him hosting. He's a much better interviewer as well.
I had an English flatmate who was gay. My gaydar worked not so well generally in the UK. I explained to him that most English people set it off, so I essentially just turned the mechanism off. He wasn't sure on which level he was offended.
Oliver's doing a decent job but he still seems a bit 'nervy' to me sometimes. Only to be expected I suppose... he's been thrown into a pretty substantial 'gig' that's been hosted by a guy who's been something of a liberal icon for over a decade. The other thing that struck me, (and I've seen it mentioned elsewhere), is how much the writing dictates the 'feel' of the show. That's something I'd always thought of as being a function of Jon Stewart as an individual but, while he's clearly an important part of it, it seems to pervade the show when he's not there. The most likely explanation is the strong writing team of which, I believe, Oliver is a part.
I think Wednesday night. Here you go.... http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/427309/june-19-2013/remembering-lorna-colbert
Cheers... I can't actually watch those in the UK, (well, outside the US the message says), so I have to watch it by 'other means' as one might say Of the two shows I prefer TDS but CR's good as well. As it's not that easy for me to get them I tend to watch one rather than both as there are good shows over here and I have to leave a certain amount of time for RL, (including squabbling with people on t'intertubes, obviously ).
See if this one works for you. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...e-to-mother-lorna-tuck-colbert_n_3469826.html
No joy on that one either. I've been around this loop a few times, tbh. IIRC you fellas have the same problems with some UK links including the BBC website I believe. Anyway, thanks for trying I'll get them tomorrow and will take a look.
Drove me nuts when they started doing that - remember thinking it was absurd that someone would take the time to prevent me from streaming radio of a Hibs v Dunfermline game. I was one of three people in the world interested in listening, and I couldn't.
Seen it now. Yes, it was very moving although, if I'm honest, I also found it rather ... well, odd. I think it would have been easier coming from JS but Colbert's schtick is that he's 'playing a part', as it were. It could be viewed as self indulgent. On the other hand maybe it's just my British 'stiff upper lip' reserve getting in the way? Dunno... Anyway, thanks for the 'heads up'
Yes. Very moving and one of the best tribute's that I have ever heard..Not sure how he got through it without totally losing it...
Is it just me, or does John Oliver curse aLOT more than Stewart did. It seems like Oliver's go to move is to throw in "f***ing" as an intensifier, and a cheap source of laughs.
I think I mentioned before about a documentary I saw a long time ago that said the French, historically, used to call the English, 'Le Goddon', (or something similar), meaning, literally, 'the goddams' because of our habit of swearing constantly. Still... the French, eh?! Fuckers, the lot of 'em!
